ELKHART COUNTY -- Property tax relief for some people appears to be in the mail.

State lawmakers passed a measure last year to send rebate checks to homeowners to help offset the increase in property taxes.

And at least one check was sent to an Elkhart County taxpayer Saturday. Most counties said they hoped to begin sending them out this month or next.

I received mine in the mail on Saturday. It looks like everyone I talked to received around the same amount. My check should have been sent to my mortgage company but that is okay!

Moved here in July 2006. Previous owners did not file for homestead exemption for 2006 so my understanding is we will get no money to help even though we ended up paying the increase. We filed for exemptions 2 weeks after we closed on the house. I feel that rule should be looked at. Not the buyers fault that the previous owners did not file.

I received mine in the mail on Friday. Was quite surprised, it was about the same amount as the photo. I pay escrow and they sent it to me instead of my bank and that was fine by me.
