ELKHART COUNTY — Some homeowners in Elkhart County are getting their property tax rebate checks in the mail. But a glitch prevented nearly a thousand checks from reaching their destination.
Some of those checks are going back to the county marked "Return to sender.”
The county treasurer’s office has received around a 1,000 property tax rebate checks that came back unopened. Many of them did not reach the intended tax payer for one reason.
“A number of them are not deliverable because the person who the check was addressed to has moved and their forwarding order from the post office has expired or they’ve left no forwarding address,” explained County Treasurer Larry Ernest.
Right now the county treasurer's office is sorting through the rebate checks that have come back so far, putting them in alphabetical order and processing them in an effort to get them to the intended recipient.
"We're sorting them into categories,” Ernest said. “Those that have valid forwarding orders, we're going to re-mail those. Those that we have no forwarding address on, we're going to try to find a better forwarding address for them. If we can't find that, we'll do some more research and see what to do with those checks."
The treasurer’s office has had numerous homeowners stop by because they haven't received their rebate check yet.
In some but not all cases, an incorrect address is the problem.
"We've talked to all of our neighbors who have received their check and we haven't received ours yet," Goshen homeowner Virginia Curtis told WSBT News. "So were kind of waiting. We waited a week now. We thought we'd come up here and see maybe what’s going on."
The treasurer’s office says it will work on the matter until it’s resolved.

The St. Joseph County treasurer told WSBT News they plan to send out their rebate checks by the end of the month.

It amazes me that the St Joe County Treasurer can find time to issue rebates but makes me wait several months just to apply for then a few more months to receive a refund of monies that I overpaid due to an error in THEIR office? I say cut government because obviously more people doesn't mean better service, but less people should me less taxes...
