NAPPANEE — A large business fire in downtown Nappanee kept firefighters busy Saturday.

The building at the corner of Main and Walnut street housed a butcher shop and a carpet store. The second story is residential apartments.

Firefighters had to rescue one man from a window, but he was not hurt. Everyone else inside the building made it out on their own safely.

Rudy Espinoza lives across the street from the building. When we woke up Saturday morning, he thought his house was on fire until he looked out the window.

"I could see flames coming out the third and fourth window so I came out here on the porch and next thing you knew there was flames shooting through the roof and everything and the smoke was so intense you could hardly see the lights on the fire trucks," said Espinoza.

He knew people lived in the apartments upstairs and was relieved to hear everyone got out OK.

"We just thank God that nobody was hurt," Espinoza said.

The single digit temperatures made the fire an even bigger challenge for firefighters. The water froze to their helmets, equipment, and parts of the street.

"Cold weather and the ice gets froze up and there ain't no way you can avoid it, just grin and bear it," said Nappanee Firefighter Junior Mast.

Firefighters took turns defrosting in a nearby business and it didn't take long for warm food and drinks to arrive.

"That's the nice part about your fellow firefighters and mutual aid — they get right out and they hang with us and it's a big job in the city today but we are gonna git-er-done," said Mast.

It was a big fire, a big job, and another big change for Nappanee.

"We were having floods last week, lot of snow the week before, getting over the tornado and all this stuff. Seems like its been a rough winter," said downtown business owner Donnie George.

Nappanee Fire Department was joined by seven other departments, including two from Kosciusko County, in battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

I believe that satan meant this fire for evil but Thank God that He is greater than satan! Nappanee has had alot of trouble recently but God is saving lives! God is still on the throne and drawing people to Him.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of the apartments and I am happy that no one was hurt. I also feel that the rumors and finger pointing that insued hurt some people even worse. An innocent man was accused for something that he had no connection with. And if they know him like they say they do they would know that he could never do this to anyone. Now that the truth is coming out, those same people that crucified him with no basis should use that same effort to apologize to him.

What do you mean "why wasn't this fight taken care of?" Unfortunately these two idiots took care of it- with an unnecessary fire! What part don't you understand? If you are so worried about it, why weren't you there to intervene??? As far as the punks who are responsible, I sincerely hope they watch their backs for a long time to come because I'm sure there are a lot of people who would like to give them a piece of their minds!

PLEASE people, as a person who knpws Larry personally,as many of us do, do you REALLY think Larry would post something like this? Honestly, I don't think he uses a computer. He is one of the kindest, most caring people I know. Yes he jokes but not about something like this. Please don't be harsh on him. This really does not sound like him! Besides, who would be STUPID enough to put their name, where they work and then write something so stupid?

Soo amazing that no one got hurt, in any of these distasters that have struck Nappanee. And everyone pulling together and doing what needs to be done that's the kinda town that I think I'd like to live in. No matter what happens there are people there who have your back.

Larry, needs to get a life , what kind of comment is that to make. It was dangerous for these fire fighters to work in these conditions, my husband was one of them working the fire along with several other milford firemen, and all other fire departments,a fire is never a good thing .There are so many people that put their lives in danger every time there is a fire.I agree Larry really should go to church sunday A.M. and have a good talk,w/God

My heart and prayers go out to all the Firefighters and the Volunteers that helped care for them. Once again the people of this town have escaped injury and shown unpresidented heart and soul. Great job done by all.

Sorry to hear about Nappanee experiencing another tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with all of those who were affected. I actually just moved from Nappanee a year ago. I always enjoyed going to town and visiting those businesses. Thank the Lord that nobody was hurt.

LARRY, JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU THINK THIS FIRE COULD OF BEEN A GOOD THING!!!

Saturday, Jan 19 at 6:53 PM tim wrote ...

Being a retired 18 year vet of a volunteer fire dept I know what the firefighters went thur today. The first few hours you are not really cold, but then the flames die down and so dose the heat. As you get cold you also start getting tired. After the fire comes hours of clean up, but that will be a few days from now. I can only pray for everyone.

Our town may be small but our hearts and our faith in God is much bigger than any fire or tornado. We're all still survivors. God has blessed our town despite all of the structural damage.

Craig, it is on the oposite side of town from Martins..right by the Library area. The butcher shop was a pretty good place that has been there a long time. I have never been to the movie theatre, but I am sure it will be missed.

Craig, Martin's Supermarket is located at the intersection of U.S. 6 and C.R. 7, on the north side of the road - about one mile from the fire scene.

Craig, the grocery store in off of US 6, east of town. The fire was just north of the intersection of US 6 and SR 19. They are probably 1/2 mile apart, approximately.

Are you kidding me...what kind of comment is that? These people have lost a business that they have built for years, two other businesses sustained serious damage and apartment residents lost their home. Nappanee has endured enough in the past three months to last a lifetime.

If it wasn't for fire alarms, my friend who lived there would not be alive today. I spoke to him earlier and he said the only reason he woke up was because of the alarm. Thank God for the alarm or my friend would be gone.
