ELKHART CO. — In this extreme cold, some people are deciding they can't or don't want to take care of their pets anymore. That means local animal shelters are filling up quickly. At the Humane Society of Elkhart County, four cats and four dogs were dropped off overnight.

The Humane Society of Elkhart County has nine overnight drop off cages. The indoor cages can be accessed from the outside of the building. But once the door is closed, it locks and cannot be re-opened.

Executive Director Eric Durcinka told WSBT the drop off area was originally designed for emergency situations where somebody has a stray dog and they need to bring it in because they can't hold it.

"Outside of that you can come in the front door and give us the information," said Durcinka. "We'll quickly get you through the process and take the animal."

Durcinka said only about one in every twenty dogs left in the boxes have information cards with them. The cards are for medical information, age and personality traits. That information is vital in deciding what the Humane Society employees do with the animal.

He also said one of the biggest problems he sees is people indiscriminately dropping off the animals with complete disregard for the location where they picked it up.

"It's imperative that the animal returns to a shelter close to where it came from. And far too often, people do not care about that, and they'll just drop off animals from Michigan or that they found while driving through Ohio," Durcinka said.

Extremely cold temperatures can be deadly for animals. Ears and paws are two extremities on dogs that can become frostbitten very easily. There are also legal requirements for pet owners.

"By law you have to provide adequate food, water and shelter for your pets. And a lot of people don't realize that," Durcinka told WSBT.

He said they find an increasing number of dogs left outside on stakes and leashes every year.

Psychologists tell us that 4 percent of the population are sociopaths. 4% of 107,789, SB population, is 4311. As a fraction of the whole population, that's small, but 4 thousand sociopaths is 4 thousand sociopaths. Many are already in prison, but far too many are cycled in and out of the system until they finally kill someone. That needs to change. Stop putting non-violent offenders in a cage. Time to get rid of the notion that "justice" = "punishment".

people shouldnt have pets if they cant take care of them and its usually the ones that dont have enough money for there kids or they have run down cars cant make the rent or pay gas bills but they have 2 cats and 3 dogs and if they cant what is wrong dropping them off in the drop box better than them getting mistreated or not fed or outside freezying

I volunteered at Elk co shelter and if you drop off an animal or leave your name on a card you will be banned from future adoption. This policy is slightly changing. I think it is good people drop them off if they can not take care of them. To leave them out in the wild allows more breeding, spreading of disease and starvation. Some may be lucky and find a home to feed them but others are hit by cars or poisioned or abused. Dont leave them on some strangers farm, or country road. be responsible

So sad knowing they are defenseless and that they totally depend on humans for food, water, shelter and love. I can understand if you found a stray and are unable to keep it but when it is your own loving pet how are you able to live with yourself. How selfish to leave a defenseless animal all alone. Makes me ill.

I am a loving pet owner. I would never keep my dogs outside. I adopted a cat from the shelter and found out my son was allergic to it. We tried everything but I had to return it to them. About a year later our dog died of old age and I went to adopt another one, But they said since i returned a cat I couldnt adopt one from them. Even though they tell you if you have to get rid of it to bring it back. Also there fees are outragouse. My dog sees a vet reg. and gets the best of treatment at haome.

I love animals and I would rather they be dropped off at a shelter than left to fend for themselves in the wild. It does sadden me to see animals just wandering with no where to go and live.

I have used the Elkhart shelter's overnight drop box for a stray I found. I work full time and go to school full time and this leaves me no time. The cages are connected to the inside, it is not like they are dropping off the animals in the frigid cold to be found in the morning. I think this is a good idea and all shelters should have an overnight drop box.I understand the boxes are being abused but if one animal is dropped off instead of being beaten, tortured,or froze to death; I say hurrah!

There are thousands of people out in society who SHOULD NOT HAVE a so-called pet. They are the same types who treat their kids like garbage and are the most selfish pigs I have ever heard of. Makes me SICK.

I think a lot of people are so rude when it comes to pets or animals of any kind....why own them in the first place. As for a stray give them food and water especially in weather like this. My sister has been watching over a stray for 3 years now. She could turn it in to the shelter, but feels he has a chance. A little house she provided on her porch with fresh food and water daily and "ole" stray is still moving along. People have some feelings.

Sorry, but this one makes me mad. If you can not be a responsible pet owner, don't get a pet. This means letting them inside when its frigid outside.

I think cops need to find the monsters that drop these animals off like this and cage them, take them to the nearest jail and drop them off in the middle of the night. Then in the morning, put them in jail. People should understand that animals have feelings too and doing this sort of thing should be considered a CRIME! If they can't take care of the animal, run an ad, there are people willing to take care of them! Whoever did this...YOU ARE A MONSTER!
