SOUTH BEND — Police have recovered some 30 of the sprinkler backflow valves that recently were stolen from neighborhoods on the city’s south side, a spokesman announced Monday.

Capt. Phil Trent, a South Bend police spokesman, said officers recovered the valves last week after a man tried to sell them at a local scrap yard.

Police spoke to the man, who told them he had found the valves and did not realize they were stolen. The man was not arrested, Trent said.

Anyone with information on the thefts may call South Bend police at (574) 235-9263, or Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.

If they would have arrested him he would pay his $100 bond, and be out before the officer left the jail. This does not mean he won't be prosecuted. Thank the judges for setting these low bonds. If you do not have bond money then they will release you without paying a bond. I know this because a relative of mine was arrested on a A misd. and they let him go a half hour later after he posted a $100 bond. I bet the cop who arrested him wasn't even done with his report before he was out of jail.

I know it's annoying to show up at a job every day, probably one you wouldn't have chosen, so that someone can steal your stuff, but I'd rather the system focused on the violent offenders. We need to think of other ways of dealing with non-violent offenders. Putting EVERYONE in jail makes crime unmanageable, so that too many of both kinds of criminal slip through the fingers of justice. I'd rather have my car stolen by a beer-eyed bum and then returned by the cops, than by organized psychopaths.

We need manufacturing jobs in this country and harsher sentences for true criminals!

Just another person who will get away with their crime and will think it is ok to do it again. There has got to be a way to get these people to jail, or some 1 will get shot by the victom. Then the victom will end up in jail for the shooting because they tried to protect their property. Com'on there has to be a better way to enforce law then just asking did you know they were stolen? "no" ok then you may go. What about possesion of stolen goods, is that not a crime, or selling the goods?

Does anybody really think these crimes will stop. what will the people say when someone is killed either trying to stop a theft or getting caught stealing? will they stand up and demand a clean sweep of the South Bend PD?
