SOUTH BEND — The last batch of some 70,394 property tax rebate checks are in the mail to St. Joseph County residents, county officials said Wednesday.

The checks, which started going out earlier this week, give a rebate to homeowners. Only primary residences are eligible.

While check amounts varied from a few cents to upward of $7,500, the average check was between $230 and $250, St. Joseph County Treasurer Sean Coleman said.

Attached to each check is a notice from the county indicating the amount of each homeowner’s rebate.

But that amount could vary from the actual check if homeowners owe delinquent taxes — a county ordinance allows officials to apply rebate amounts to back property taxes.

St. Joseph County Auditor Pete Mullen said the checks will be an economic boost to the community as people likely will spend the money locally.

Hey Fred, and the majority of kids in first grade want ice cream for breakfast.

Sean, how come you can issue rebates faster then refunds? Several months to get monies I overpaid due to your office's error is rediculous!!

Hey Pete Mullen, we'd have a lot more to spend locally if the property tax was completely eliminated. That is what the majority of the voters want.
