TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (AP) — Naval investigators were looking into the death of an Indiana Marine found in his barracks room with a gunshot wound to his chest, officials said.

Military police found Lance Cpl. Cameron M. Babcock, 19, of Plymouth, late Sunday at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Marine officials said in a prepared statement.

The officers were responding to a forwarded 911 call from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Babcock, who had just returned from duty in Iraq, was pronounced dead at the base hospital early Monday.

"Thus far, information does not indicate that the shooting was self-inflicted nor intentional, but rather was the result of the negligent handling of a privately owned gun," the news release said.

Naval investigators are required to investigate all medically unattended deaths at Naval and Marine installations.
