PLYMOUTH — U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Cameron M. Babcock, 19, of Plymouth, will be laid to rest with military honors Tuesday at New Oakhill Cemetery.

The ceremony will follow funeral services for Babcock, who was killed Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Baptist Church, 11345 9A Road. The Rev. Douglas Jividen will officiate.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to Tuesday’s services at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St.

Babcock was shot once in the chest in his barracks of the 1st Marine Division at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base, Calif., shortly before midnight Sunday.

Camp Pendleton officials issued a news release stating the death "… does not indicate that the shooting was self-inflicted or intentional, but rather was the result of the negligent handling of a privately-owned weapon."

Babcock was taken to the Naval Hospital Twentynine Palms emergency room, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service, a civilian law enforcement agency of the Department of the Navy required to investigate all medically unattended deaths that occur on bases, is investigating the incident.

The 2006 Plymouth High School graduate was the son of Jeffery and Ann Babcock of Plymouth. He had served one tour of duty in Iraq, and was able to return to his home in Plymouth over the Christmas holidays to be with family and friends.

He was an infantry rifleman, and since his enlistment June 20, 2006, Babcock earned the National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and Certificate of Commendation.

Babcock was slated to return to Iraq in the winter of 2008, Camp Pendleton officials said. He served with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

What kind of pearson does a thing like this? Does America not appreciate what these men and women do for us? This country appears to be falling away fast. Greedy people who don't say thank you or show thanks seem to out- number those who do now- n- days. I too know how it feels to loose a loved one in the Marines; and I pray the family finds comfort among friends and family.
