PLYMOUTH — Marshall County residents are asked by Marshall County commissioners and the Plymouth mayor to fly American flags at half-staff beginning at 4 p.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Tuesday to honor the life of Marine Lance Cpl. Cameron Babcock.

Babcock, 19, a Plymouth resident, was killed in his barracks in California on Jan. 20. He had returned from a tour of duty in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Services for Babcock will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Baptist Church, 11345 9A Road. Friends may call at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to services Tuesday.

Babcock will be buried with military honors at New Oakhill Cemetery.

Who cares if its illegal to lower the flag...If you knew Cameron the way we did at the high school and even after, he is certainly worth doing this for. I am in West Virginia attending college and I am doing it because he was that influencial and important in the lives of his community. He will be greatly missed by all he touched. He was a true inspiration and will be remembered for that.

President Bush signed into law June 29 an amendment to the U.S. Flag Code allowing wider use of lowering flags in honor of soldiers killed during wartime. Until the change, a U.S. flag was supposed to be flown at half-staff only after the death of a key U.S. government officials, president, and former state political leader.

Cam... you will be greatly missed by all your friends and family! We had some great times in school! It is heart renching that you could make it through Iraq and something of this happens. You were always great at making us all laugh, you will leave a great impression! No more trouble making. You did your duty by serving your nation and I know that was important to you. I won't forget all the crazy things we did though. Miss you, Love Ya!!

I thought it was illegal to lower the American flag for anything unless decreed by the POTUS. While I think it is certainly worthy of the utmost attention and respect to lower it in honor of those who serve, I don't think it is actually federally legal..
