ST. JOSEPH COUNTY — St. Joseph County leaders say Sheriff Frank Canarecci stole money from taxpayers, and they're working to get it back.

County attorneys filed a counterclaim Thursday, alleging the sheriff "deceived the county" when he kept thousands of dollars collected from outstanding tax warrants.

The suit claims taxpayers are entitled to get that money back, because they're victims of a crime.

Canarecci filed his own lawsuit against the county late last year, when county leaders cut his salary after finding out he was keeping the tax warrant money.

Canarecci's attorney calls the counterclaim "false and slanderous," and says the sheriff has a right to collect the tax warrant money under Indiana law.
