FULTON CO. — An Indiana State Trooper is dead after a crash on US 31 in Fulton County. Police say Trooper Daniel Barrett died when his car smashed into a tree. Barrett's squad car was the only car involved in the incident.

The crash happened on US 31, just north of State Road 110, north of Rochester. Police are trying to figure out what Trooper Barrett was working on before the accident, and why his car left the road around 11 p.m. Sunday night, crashing into a tree.

The northbound lanes of US 31 were closed while crews investigated the accident.

Trooper Barrett was in the middle of his shift which ran from 4 p.m. until 2:45 a.m.

Police report that weather was not a factor in the accident and the trooper had called in for the final time at 10:40 p.m.

A press release reports that the accident happened at 10:42 p.m.

Police tell WSBT “a passing semi driver called 911 when he saw a car go off the road or into a ditch."

Barrett, 25, was a 2002 graduate of Logansport High School. He graduated from the police academy July 6, 2007, and just received his squad car October 17, 2007.

Police are asking for anyone in the area of U.S. 31 South of State Road 110, Sunday night from 10:30 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. who may have seen anything to contact Indiana State Police at the Peru post.
