RV workers say uncertainty at all-time high

ELKHART COUNTY — Recent layoffs and cutbacks have fueled new fears of a major slowdown across the local RV industry. Now, experts say new data supports that theory.

That new report comes from the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, and it shows wholesale shipments down 9.5 percent in 2007, marking the worst sales performance industry wide since 2003.

And the forecast for 2008 isn't much brighter. That's left some of the 65,000 manufacturing workers in Elkhart County wondering when they might get a pink slip too.

Scott Barrett is one of them.

"Uncertainty is definitely at a high," he said, after leaving his first shift job at Travel Supreme on State Road 19 in Wakarusa. "And we are concerned about the future."

You won't hear Barrett complain because even after the production line he's worked on for the last seven years shut down last week, right now, he still has a job.

"We're one of the few that will be called back, and we feel bad for the ones that won't be," he said.

Barrett isn't sure how long those calls back will last, particularly after what he's seen lately across the industry.

Last week, 200 workers were laid off at Monaco Coach in Wakarusa. Newmar RV in Nappanee cut back to a 3-day work week last week. Company executives tell WSBT News layoffs may soon be the only option left there too.

It's the same story at Travel Supreme, where production did resume Monday, but company executives conceded it may not last for long. Even industry giants like Coachmen Industries in Elkhart call 2007 "one of the most challenging years for our company."

Experts say it's no coincidence that the bad news is hitting from all sides.

"They're all looking at the same data, and they're all arriving at the same conclusions, and the data's just not very pretty," said Indiana University South Bend Economics Professor Dr. Lane David. "In the RV industry and the automotive industry, there's definitely a recession already, and we're seeing the effects of that."

They aren't hard to glimpse.

More than 100 workers from Monaco and other smaller local RV makers packed into unemployment offices in Elkhart and South Bend Monday alone. It's the largest one day volume from the RV industry that WorkOne business manager Howard Blackwood can ever remember.

"Normally we do not see that," said Blackwood. "If they close down one plant, they tend to reabsorb it in the other plants."

Blackwood believes that means the worst may still lie ahead. Even so, he's staying optimistic.

"They've always weathered the storm," he said. "They'll weather this one."

Barrett is staying optimistic, too. The only question left for him is how long the storm will last.

"We'll just plow through. We don't have any other choice and we'll just see what tomorrow brings," he said.

Dr. Davis says, unfortunately, "tomorrow" may bring more bad news. The RV, automotive and housing industries are typically leading indicators of more widespread problems with the economy, and because of that, he predicts losses of around 5 percent across the RV industry in 2008.

But all three of those industries are very cyclical, and David says that's a good sign too.

"The industry is not in its death throes or anything like that," he said. "This is a somewhat normal thing. Unfortunately, it's very painful for the people who are involved in it. The two things you really have to look for are stabilization in gas prices, and stabilizing home prices. And once both of those happen, I think the economy will turn around fairly quickly after that."

Dr. David, and other industry experts expect the slowdown to continue for the next few months, but if fuel prices do drop, and interest rates stabilize, he expects the RV industry to begin rebounding by the summer of 2008.

My husband and I are now waiting for our new 5th wheel from Travel Supreme. We have heard such good things about them. I sure hope with the layoff their quality remains the same... we are worried.

I have worked on my own RVs. Removed lights and seen where it looks like someone slugged the wall with a sledge hammer to create the opening for the light. Across the board the quality is poor. From the top down you are all responsible for the product you produce. I bought a TS 5th wheel yesterday. The quality is the best I have seen in years. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men - It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

I'm not!,however,I do very much feel that the people that have worked and sacrificed so much to be there so diligently for so many years, hard working years, might have been able to recieve something..a thank you card would have been nicer than the slap in their face, that they recieved..the saddest part,is that ever since the ownership change. It went straight down..Pete still President,"No profit"..?

I appreciate your great attitude, I do, however, it is your business what the owner's do if they are skimming off illegally what should be going to keeping the company running.

Wednesday, Jan 30 at 5:09 PM anonymous wrote ...

I worked at Travel Supreme and was layed off too. They always treated me fair and if you get a fair wage it isn't our business what the owner's do. If you didn't like it you should have left earlier. People either get bitter or better in situations like this.

The Bottom line at Travel Supreme is mis-mangement, plan and simple. The top dogs put someone in charge that never should of been. His own arrogance, has caused this company to go downhill and come to total failure in less then two years. Bad part is everyone saw it and the head guy wouldn't listen!

Finally, the voice of reason, someone who knows those snot nose kids. I don't feel for the owners either. They will bankrupt the company and move on to another venture. As for the God first, you will know them by their fruit, you are right on the money----yet to be seen.

Working in the RV industry is no different then playing the lottery...at some point you will get burnt. It has always been an unstable industry with a lot of good years followed by very nasty ones. The owners of these companies deserve to make a profit..that is why they own the business in the first place..that holds true for any business owner. Do-little Donnley has himself confused with a foreign dignity and spends his time in the air flying.

My husband used to work at Travel Supreme and was laid off there twice before this. The running joke between the guys is what new SUV the owners were going to buy for their daughters this year. They would say that their blood and sweat for them. I have no sympathy for the owners and won't listen to their fake sympathy for their employees- they only care about themselves. They never talk with their employees, never go out to the shop. Their motto says God first, but that has yet to be seen.

Cassie...you know what I heard? I heard that Travel Supreme is restructering into a "Supreme Arby's", but will have a whole new line of sandwich's! the("hot belt"). Not to worry, some of our company's are going to be doing simular, but as "Wendy's River",(new line of yellow frostee's), "McMonaco",new("bigbac-rib") and of course the "Neumar King's" (Big Doggy!)...It all just makes your mouth water doesn't it! But hey just listen to some of the leadership responding... it will only get better!

Heres the story at Travel Supreme, they say they are not "closing" but everyone of us are getting let go after the last unit goes past our area,I was there for 5 years, and say what you will about Bush, gas prices whatever you want to blame it on ,but the companys that are ran right will make it.Ask anyone who works, worked there things were great before certain people were placed in charge of manufacturing, its just unbelievable the owners couldndt see it like all of us did.

I've been in this industry since 1995 and this happens every year. Maybe not to this extent, but everyone who works in this field knows what to expect this time of year. My company is in fact doing better right now then this time last year. The good companies hold on until it gets better.

Newmar is laying off 20% tomorrow. Add Monaco's and Travel Supreme's and you have close to 500 laid off - where are 500 people going to find jobs in this area?

What's the story at Travel Supreme today? Are they closing? The news reports aren't accurate. the head guy gives some pretty sounding story. No real fact.

Scott, why should we blame Bush? He cannot control gas prices anymore than I can...Did Bush and the White House not buy enough R.V.'s this year? Hmmmm..... I think that it will be what it will be... it will get worse over the next few months, but it will eventually get better as well... I for one would be happy to see the managment to become more honest with the employee's, and give us better insight as to what is going on... We are big boy's and girls, we can take it... but we do have families.

I think people are misinterpreting some of this. Travel Supreme is closing, but they were small and mismanaged. Yes, there is a slow-down, but for decades the RV industry in Elkhart County has weathered this sort of thing and they will this time too. A few poorly managed businesses will not survive.
