Coroner: Teen found dead in South Bend home was 'huffing'

SOUTH BEND — Police have ruled a 19-year-old man’s death accidental after he was found inside his home Tuesday afternoon on the northeast side.

The man, identified as Brian K. Coleman, died from asphyxia, St. Joseph County Deputy Coroner Chuck Hurley said. He was likely “huffing” some sort of videotape cleaner from an aerosol can, Hurley said.

A relative made the discovery just before 3 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Foster Street. Coleman had duct tape over his mouth, which often is used while huffing, Hurley said.

Foul play has been ruled out as a possible cause of death, said Capt. Phil Trent, a South Bend police spokesman.

Hurley said teenagers who do these kind of drugs often poke a small hole in the tape and huff in the spray through a straw, which causes the person to lose oxygen. Very rarely does it cause death, but Hurley stressed how dangerous it is.

“Kids do it to get high, but once you lose control, you just take it too far and go unconscious,” he said. “Usually, if somebody is doing it, they have a cluster of friends doing it, too. Hopefully, this will teach them of the dangers.”

Hurley said he has seen three or four cases of huffing-related deaths in the past couple years, although many are associated with paint.

Meanwhile, former Gov. Joe Kernan arrived at the home with one of Coleman’s uncles, Terry Coleman, who works for Kernan at Coveleski Stadium, police said. Kernan was talking with police and went inside the house.

Brian Coleman also is the nephew of County Treasurer Sean Coleman.

My heart goes out to the entire Coleman family. I am so sorry to hear about this tragedy. I was just reading about what a great guy Brian was on the internet. I would have been proud to have known him. I went to school and played baseball with his dad Kelly and Tim was one of my Babe Ruth coaches. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family.

Although I never have met Brianin person I was totally impressed by his wonderful spirit. Spoke to him just before the tragedy. I am totally speechless. I hope so that there is a loving G'd who holds him safe. A holocaust survivor.

At 19 I too thought I was immortal. Dying was something old people did. Unfortunately, only the wisdom of age is the cure. Our hearts go out to the family.

What a tragic event. Parents must arm themselves with the cacts and speak to their children about misusing common household products - a deadly choice that can kill anytime this is done. I have to disagree strongly that "a lot of kids are huffing". This makes it sound like "most kids are huffing" and that is no where near accurate. Unlike smoke, drink and a whole host of recreational drugs, huffing is well known as a way to dissolve the nerves and destroy the brain. Most kids couldn't be made to do it at gun point.

I am sorry for the family of such a young person. God bless I just don't understand why they would post "How to Huff ________" everytime something terrible happens it is always in detail. Details that other children or young adults can read and try doing. I just don't understand everyone don't need to know the "How To's " how about posting " The Sign's of __" . This would be so much more helpfull without maybe causing other damages.
