SOUTH BEND — Many schools across the area canceled classes Wednesday because of icy roads and dangerously cold temperatures. All roads were open during the morning commute, but police urged drivers to stay off the Bypass and the Toll Road.

St. Joseph County police said they had to temporarily close the Bypass between SR 23 and Mayflower Rd. overnight Tuesday because of flooding in some areas.

The Toll Road was icy and dangerous, according to Toll Road police. They told WSBT drivers should use extreme caution if they had to use the Toll Road at all.

In Marshall County, U.S. 31 southbound was closed around midnight after a tree fell across the lanes near the U.S. 30 intersection.

"They're everywhere," said LaPorte County officials of their slide-offs and accidents, though fortunately, there were no reports across the region of serious crashes.

"The wind is the worst part of it all," added LaPorte city authorities.

In Cass County, officials asked people to stay off the roads unless travel was critical. In fact, county authorities warned that if motorists did have an emergency, 911 crews were likely to have difficulty themselves while responding.

Berrien County police dispatchers said some back roads had drifted shut, and blowing and drifting snow was still a problem at 6 a.m.

Michigan State Police at midnight asked all drivers to stay off I-94 from the Indiana-Michigan state line clear through to Calhoun County unless travel was absolutely essential.

Shortly after 1 a.m., MSP said all westbound lanes were closed from Lawrence because the roads were so icy that trucks could not move and blocked the highway.

I couldn't understand why my daughter's school, which is a private school, took so long to close. St. Joseph, Mi and Lakeshore were closed long before her's was. You know it had to be bad if St. Joe and Lakeshore closed. They are usually the last two to close.

There needs to be a lot more consideration to the children and parents of this school system. If the weather is bad at 5 a.m the chance is pretty good the roads will be dangerous. My point being is this, Joe Sabo needs to close school sooner than 5 min. before my child leaves to board a bus!

As concerned parents that we all are if we are at anytime unconfortable with sending our children to school we should not do so. To give the superindentants a hard time is just not right. They are in the business of educating our students. Their jobs depend on it (as checked by the ISTEP scores). All of the disruptions for ALL things that we think that school should be canciled is not right. If you don't want them to go, don't send them. Simple.

You are not alone, Wa-Nee schools have stayed opened several times this year when they should've been at least delayed. I'm certain that the only reason they closed today was because all other areas schools did. We've had buses go off the road and drivers complaining, but that never seems to matter. We've gone to school through tornado disaster, flooding, ice storm, and accumulating snow. My daughter said that her teacher was even complaining, saying that school will be open no matter what.

I already had made my decision not to send my son to school. I am glad that we have a responsable person in charge. Thank you Mr. Zimmerman.

At least Zimmerman has some heart and brains where they should be. Dr. Raymond would have kept the schools open.
