MISHAWAKA — Investigators are trying to determine what caused the popular Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que to catch on fire. Firefighters battled the blaze in harsh conditions to get the blaze under control.

The fire broke out at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the restaurant on Grape Road in Mishawaka.

Temperatures were in the single digits with winds blowing as strong as 40 mph. Firefighters had to contend with wind chills as low as -15 degrees.

Assistant Chief Greg Hunt said all crews were sent to fire when it was reported about 12:30 a.m. and some people were called in on overtime.

The bone-chilling temperatures and wind were a problem.

“The wind chill was pretty bad on the guys,” Hunt said.

But Hunt said nobody was injured, just ready to thaw out when they got back to their respective stations.

Hunt said there was no problem hooking into water and getting it going when crews arrived.

But they had to take the hoses back to fire stations to thaw them out and put them away properly.

Much of the fire damage was to the roof of the restaurant, especially a decorative parapet on the front of the building.

“Most of the inside is OK,” Hunt said. “The sprinklers went off so there is some water damage inside though.”

Even by 7:15 Wednesday morning, the scene still smelled strongly of barbecue.

There was nobody in the restaurant when the fire broke out, according to the assistant chief.
