Waking up to frozen windshield wipers and frozen car doors

SOUTH BEND — Icy roads and brutally cold temperatures are causing a lot of problems on roads around the area, making travel difficult.

Police report dozens of accidents on the Toll Road in LaPorte County. Drivers are urged to avoid the Toll Road and the Bypass due to the road conditions.

Usually State Road 23 is one of the first to be cleared, but crews are having a tough time with that for two reasons: It's too cold for salt to melt the snow, and there's a sheet of ice underneath the snow.

But those aren't the only problems with this extreme temperature dip we saw overnight. People across the area woke up to frozen windshield wipers and frozen car doors.

“It's a good day for business!” said Chad Kieft of Overhead Door Systems.

Local garage door repair companies say their phones are ringing off the hook.

“The common problem with the doors and openers is the doors, when the weather changes, they get frozen to the concrete,” explained Kieft. “What probably happened in this situation is it froze, the opener tried to open it, the chain pulled back and it just snapped.”

But a good day of business for one person can be a brutal day of work for the next.

"You go numb, you get used to it," letter carrier Jeremy Breden told WSBT News.

Breden only remembers one day in his 10 years as a letter carrier when deep snow made it impossible to deliver mail.

“I’ll take the cold — you can dress for that,” Breden said. “But snow wears you out by the end of the day.”

Road crews will have a short break in the weather to get caught up, but then more snow is expected to fall Thursday night.

Check the forecast.

This type of weather is a big business boom for body shops. Many people break windows and door handles, wiper blades and wiper motors due the fast freeze. This weather demands patients and thinking ahead.

Hey Reid, mail carriers are paid to walk through snow. You know, when they retire, they are paid the rest of their lives, so I think that trudging through deep snow is worth the effort for a lifetime paycheck.

If all of our tax money wasn't being spent overseas maybe we would have more money for snow plows and potholes.

Try delivering newspapers in the early morning b/f the plows
