MISHAWAKA — Parents of students at Penn High School are being notified about a threat found Tuesday written on a boy’s bathroom stall.

“This time its for real,” the message read. “Everyone dies. 4/18/08.”

The message was written in ink in 6-inch letters that were difficult to read. There was a box drawn around it, according to an alert on the Penn Web site.

Teresa Carroll, a spokeswoman for the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp., said that information is being sent home to parents and posted on the Internet.

“What happens is students realize they can create a lot of havoc,” Carroll said. “There’s publicity and parents will pull their kids out of school.”

This is the second message of its kind at Penn this school year. The first date came and went, but did stir up concern from parents and students.

Many students elected to take that day off from school.

“It’s unfortunate,” Carroll said, “because it creates a fear in the community that’s unfounded.”

Carroll said it is nearly impossible to reasonably identify a culprit in these cases. There is no way to put surveillance cameras in the restrooms.

Carroll said that school officials have no reason to believe the threat is credible. Still, they plan to use extra security April 18.

“The thing is we still have to take these things seriously,” Carroll said. “We’re not done with it yet.”

Anyone with information regarding the message is asked to call Director of Safety and Security Randy Yohn at (574) 258-9551 or the Safe School PartnerLine at (574) 258-9536.

you think schools would learn from all deaths at other schools and take extra security.

We are coming to an age where there will be metal detectors in our schools, because some parents are clueless and don't talk and pay attention to their kids. Be their parent, not their friend. If you're guilty about having to work all the time, then set aside time to talk with your kid, not criticize them. Spend time, get to know their interests

We really need to stay connected to our kids. They need to know we care, and we will be concerned all the time about them. I feel Penn is a safe place to be as a parent who knows many teachers and students who attend their. Please as a parent of two kids "PLEASE" talk to your kids, and make sure everyday that you know what is going on in their world. Your their teacher as well as their parent!!!!!! Your job is to protect and make we are sending them safely to school.

It seems the students need to go to school and learn how to spell.

If I have reason to believe ANY inappropriate items are in a backpack I follow the corporations policy which is to separate the student and the bag by placing the backpack on the front seat across the aisle where I can see it and then hand it to a school administrator when we arrive at school. The first line of defense is for parents to talk to their children but people should know that the buses are the safest places for children to be particularly when policies are in place and followed.

there should be the same alouance for school personell as there is for law enforcement.. probical cause to search back packs or lockers, or students. Common sence should rule here!

I'm a 67 year old great grandfather. I urge ALL Penn High School patents to sit your kids down and talk to them NOW. At least one of these kids knows who wrote it. Get the answer.

What if there was a weapon in that backpack? Then the bus driver would be declared a hero! Man, you can't win for losing... It seems to me that PHM has their priorities in the wrong place- it's not at all about students or staffs safety, it's about not "offending" anybody. I sincerely hope that the threat is unfounded, but God forbid it would happen. PHM will have a lot of apologizing to do to the parents who pay the salaries of those in charge through their tax dollars.

Seems like we can't do this and we can't do that until something happens and we end up wishing we had done anything to prevent it. You can't put cameras IN the restrooms but you can put them OUTSIDE the entrances to see who goes in and out. How many incidents have occurred on school buses this year, including a handgun being passed around in South Bend. My son's bus driver for PHM was reprimanded for having checked a students back pack when the student told another rider he had a weapon in it.
