Lake effect snow, whiteout conditions and slideoffs in Southwest Michigan

Travel is expected to be difficult after another winter storm hit Michiana overnight. (WSBT file photo)

SOUTH BEND — With all of Northern Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan under a Winter Storm Warning, travel will be difficult Friday.

Snow totals will average 6" to 10", with some locally higher amounts possible. Gusty winds will create blowing and drifting of snow.

Visibility is expected to be poor at certain times during the storm.

A winter weather ban has been issued on the Indiana Toll Road until 7 p.m. for all long double and triple semi-trucks. Any affected vehicles that entered the Toll Road prior to the ban will be required to pull into a truck lot, travel plaza or exit the road.

Officers throughout the area are reporting few slide-offs. That was attributed to drivers heeding the message.

Drivers are asked to allow enough driving distance between other vehicles, and strongly encouraged to allow enough time for travel and conditions.

The weather has caused the cancellation or delay of flights locally at the South Bend Regional Airport as well as hundreds of flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Some flights also have been canceled at the Indianapolis International Airport because of the weather.

Move from South Bend to Mishawaka...our city is alive and the crews do a good job. 8:30 am and my small dead end street was being plowed. Not bad at all.

Now is it the storm that makes travel difficult, or the slacker SB street crews?
