PLYMOUTH — Both city and county crews are fighting what department heads called a "losing battle" with Friday morning’s snow.

Jim Marquardt, superintendent of Plymouth’s street department, already was calling for residents who park on city streets to move their vehicles so plows could get through.

"If people can move their cars as soon as possible, we can make a lot more headway," Marquardt said of the challenge in downtown Plymouth this morning.

"It’s imperative that we clear these streets as soon as we can," Mark Senter, mayor, added. "Hopefully, this is the worst we’ll see today."

Even Michigan Street, Plymouth’s main north-south thoroughfare had several inches of slush to contend with, he noted. Narrow side streets downtown, especially those with parked cars, were nearly impassable.

Indiana 17, which curves around Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Plymouth, was extremely slick, with several slide-offs reported, police said.

"We started out at 3 (a.m.), and the guys said we had an inch or two at that point. Then it just dumped on us right before 7 (a.m.)," Marquardt said, adding, "We’re trying to stay on top of it."

"Yes, at this point in time, it’s pretty bad," Neal Haeck, Marshall County Highway Department superintendent, agreed.

When asked if there was a particular area hardest hit, he quipped, "All of Marshall County."

"We’re just going to have to keep doing what we’re doing," he said of plows returning to re-work pretty much all areas of the county.

I have helped all of my neighbors clear their driveways. Again, I have yet to see anyone from the city department of South Bend clearing the streets. I would love to thank the crews for their hard work...if it had been done. Not one truck has been down our street yet today.
