NILES — Even though we won't see much more snow Friday night, we're still dealing with what already fell. Berrien County saw up to 9 inches of snow.

Surprisingly, police have not been busy with accidents at all. Niles police say they’ve only responded to a few slide-offs Friday.

They say that's because schools were canceled and drivers are getting used to this weather.

But even with very few accidents, drivers in Niles still have their share of problems.

A relatively new salon in downtown Niles, The Shoppe stays pretty busy.

"We have a lot of foot traffic, a lot of traffic going through, so we're pretty visible,” said Jen Hoese, who works at The Shoppe.

But it's the traffic on the road that catches their attention on days like this.

"The other day we had a semi stuck out here on the hill going up, that was kind of interesting,” Hoese said.

Niles is built on a hill, and police say during the snowy weather it can cause big problems for drivers.

Places like the Broadway Hill are especially dangerous for people who don't have good traction, and that's why many drivers try to avoid it.

"Going down wouldn't be so bad I think, but going up might,” said driver Lisa Atwood.

"It's difficult to get up this hill sometimes especially when it's a red light,” explained Niles Police Capt. James Merriman. “However, when the weather gets bad, slippery conditions, we switch the lights over into town to flashing yellow so the east-west traffic gets yellow and so they can keep moving."

The city also helps keep traffic moving by plowing the snow into the middle of street. This creates a barrier between the cars.

"Sometimes that helps a lot when it comes to somebody losing control, sliding out of control,” Merriman said. “They never are able to go into oncoming traffic."

"Actually it kind of serves as a buffer which is really nice,” agreed Atwood.

Michigan State Police reported a few slide-offs on the Bypass earlier Friday.

Buchanan police also reported a couple of slide-offs, but nothing major.

That’s probably a good indication that drivers are getting used to the winter weather and being more careful.

If they plowed the snow to the sides of the streets it would end up in the parking spots or possibly onto the sidewalks-which both would be a hazard for drivers and pedestrians. It goes to the middle of the street-then they return later and load it into the back of trucks with a special built snow-thrower vehicle and haul it away.

stupidity? they need to educate the city workers on how to plow and drive. and whatever happened to hiring standards?

Is there a good reason Niles plows to the center of the street?

this idea is a good one and it has saved a lot of problems in the past. but how are the outlying roads.. passable at all?
