SOUTH BEND — Hundreds of students got a three-day weekend, but not everyone got the day off. Students in South Bend still had school, despite the weather. Some parents kept their students out of school anyway, because they didn't think it was safe.

Parents picking up students at James Madison School were upset they had to be there in the first place.

“It's too cold and the roads are way too bad for this,” said April Cleveland, who has to drive her children to school.

“A lot of schools have a two-hour delay and I think that would have been more appropriate for us to have,” said Jennifer Hilleary, who was picking up two of her children.

Others drove their students across town, rather than put them on school buses.

“I didn't want my kids on the bus,“ said Mike Clark, whose children are usually bused from the southern part of town. “I feel safer with them in the car with me, than on a bus.”

School Board Trustee Dawn Jones heard from upset parents all day.

She told WSBT News at the time the superintendent made the decision — around 4 a.m. — the roads weren't that bad.

“The roads, even though they were treacherous, as always, they didn't prevent the school buses from rolling,” Jones said. “The school buses were out there and they were on time.”

South Bend schools have traditionally been reluctant to close for a number of reasons.

“It provides supervision for children during the day. It provides breakfast, it provides lunch,” Jones said. “That was something that was emphasized when Dr. Calvin [was superintendent] and that's just a tradition that we do.”

But many parents remain unconvinced.

“It really didn't make sense. They could have made up a day in the summer,” Mike Clark said. “This could have been avoided.”

South Bend Schools Superintendent Robert Zimmerman could not be reached for comment about his decision to keep schools open.

My child was unexcused for being late during this storm advisory even though our car was trapped due to snow height. I'm told by school personell only if the buses run late, is it excused-?? Or the fact that a fire drill was held at my childs school last week, and the children were sent to stand outside in the middle of winter with no coat, hat, or gloves. My child just got over the flu a week prior to this drill. Why is the SBCSC putting our young children at so much risk during the winter?

School is not for learning. It is a day care center. You know this is true. That was its stated purpose when first instituted in 1900. How else could all those scary Russian immigrants be integrated into our ways and traditions? Only the naive aren't aware of this. Why do you want to lie to yourself?

This is what I found ironic. SBCSC claimed that because 60% of their students were on the free or reduced breakfast/lunch program, they had to keep the schools open. What happens to these kids on the weekend?? Do they starve? What about school vacations? You gotta love the irony. We kept it open to feed the kids, yet... then again, trying to understand anything SBCSC does is not worth the time or effort.

Didn't matter if there was 2 feet of snow, didn't matter if the temp didn't rise above zero. Then senior year, there was another day off. I didn't believe it until I saw it on TV myself. How many of you got up and shoveled at that time of the day? We did at our house but I can tell you that most in our area did not.

With people like Dawn Jones make decisions about are children makes me think we don't need people like her deciding the fate of our children. She needs to ashame of decision. She put kids in danger over HER DECISION so the kids have to go one or 2 extra days at the end of the year so what at least they are safe. Another stupid mistake made by are wonderful school board member.

the people who make this decision should stand their lazy hind ends ot on the corner for 20 to 30 min. and then decide whether to make all the kids do it. I'm thrilled that I only have one more kid to go and then I'm out of the South Bend School System for good! Why are we one of the few schools in this area that dont have a 2 hour delay plan in place. Incompetancy at its worst. One more year, I wish I would have moved to the Penn district 18 years ago!!! I found myself apologising to my kid

I can't believe they would want to risk the students lives as well as their employees. It's not worth it. The roads are very dangerous.

Hmmmm...I haven't heard of many kids in our area dying from starvation lately! Those of us in the PHM district and other districts who have to work arrange for other babysitting services outside of the schools on snow days! Also, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a very cheap and satisfying lunch for a child! This is a very lame excuse!!! Get a clue SBCSC!

Well, I have been waiting to see what excuse SBCSC would make for staying open today. My advice for them is to just admit they were wrong and they should have closed. Hopefully it doesn't take someone getting hurt before they realize the importance of what a snow day can be. The schools are not a babysitting service and I believe that by telling the public that they are discrediting the work that the teachers do on a daily basis. They are not babysitters they are teachers!!

I don't think it's just kids from 'poor environments' that need school, it should be kids need school. I hate it when we 'label' kids in need...rich or poor there are lousy home environments in all social classes. Also, it is the parents choice to send their children in this weather, the school is just available.

okay so the school is saying that they stayed open for low income families and that these children depend on them to stay warm, be supervised and fed. This sounds like child abuse or neglect shouldnt the school be reporting this instead of endangering all the lives of all the children that attend South Bend Schools.

So the politicians of South Bend can't work, but the kids can go to school. Typical of our lazy politicians.

So They are pretty much saying that they are a Baby Sitting Service. They put hundreds of lives in danger today becuase of poor road conditions.

Who is to blame when something tragic happens to a bus full of children? I am not upset that I have to work today, I am more bothered by the fact that I had to choose whether or not to put my OWN child onto a bus today. I decided to keep her home and find a babysitter. The weather may not seem bad to "some", but think of it from the bus drivers point of view. They are out on these roads with busses full of children slipping and slidding around.

every year we have to hear that they have to supply daycare . For the kids . What happens when one gets hit walking in the street because there is to much snow on the sidewalks is daycare now that important
