SOUTH BEND — Missing information at one of the area's largest employers could put thousands at risk.

Memorial Hospital has notified employees that a laptop containing personal information is missing.

An employee lost the laptop while traveling in November.

This week employees received a letter warning them that the missing computer contains their names, addresses, birth dates, ID numbers and social security numbers.

“The laptop she had was not encrypted. We were in the process of doing that for all our laptops, which we'll have done now probably in the next week or so,” said Dr. George Soper, vice president of Human Resources at Memorial Hospital. “This is an unfortunate situation and something you can never take lightly.”

Soper says the employee had carried the laptop on an American Airlines flight, but the flight attendant took it away because there wasn't any room to store it where she was sitting.

Memorial waited to inform employees until investigations by both American Airlines and the hospital were finished.

It affects about 4,300 full and part-time employees and retirees.

Memorial is offering to monitor their credit report for one year for free.

“We've had maybe 50, 60 calls from that population so far and some are pretty upset about it, some curious, but yeah, there's concern about it,” said Soper.

Employees at Memorial tell WSBT they are upset but wouldn't go on camera for fear of losing their jobs.

They’re now hoping their personal information is not accessed on the lost laptop.

The laptop did not contain any patient information.

Employees have to sign up if they want to take part in the free credit monitoring.

I've read all of this and cannot believe it. I will never to to Memorial. I'll stick with our local hospital after reading all of this. What kind of place doesn't tell it's staff about losing personal information? All this venting about the excessive pay of management makes me glad I live in a community where I'm not subsidizing it. I know our hospital managers treat their staff well and don't make millions of dollars. Maybe the two go hand in hand. I feel sorry for the workers.

Keep it up. Maybe you'll get national headlines and make sure the person with the laptop knows what he/she has and can really do some damage. Management plant. You're funny.

BESIDES, they had three months prior warning that none of the other employees had. Hmmm! "Hysteria?" You obviously haven't a clue management plant.

You're all funny. Did it occur to any of you that regardless of their role, managers and administrators are employees too? Their information was on that unit as well! And, just because the laptop is missing, doesn't mean that someone has accessed the file. What concerns me is that in an emergency, you really need a healthcare professional to be calm. Your hysteria is shocking. Take a deep breath healthcare workers. It will be alright.

according to tax returns that are public, his compensation is shocking. They say it's well over a million dollars this year. And the amount over a million, is enough to pay for two beautiful local homes AND PAY in cash. Most of us take out 30 year mortgages to buy a home like that. There's something wrong with this situation. Is there any kind of oversight for this? You'd think that there would be. These guys don't even have medical degrees, but their making millions.

If you divide the number of people living in South Bend (107,785 thousand)by Phil Newbold's estimated current compensation package, it's as if every Man, Woman, Adolescent, Toddler and Newborn baby is paying 13 dollars a piece every year JUST FOR HIS salary. Is this REALLY A NOT-FOR-PROFIT serving the people who live in this community? Or is it a pot of gold for a few people?

Dear Sad Current Employee, What world are YOU living in. Certainly not Memorial's. An internal forum? What a joke. Memorial's a not-for-profit. The community is SUPPOSED to keep a close eye on it. It's SUPPOSED to serve the public good. That's the trade off for not paying taxes. It's supposed to SERVE the public -- not LINE THE POCKETS of a handful of administrators making millions of dollars on sick people in this town. Get real.
