VALPARAISO (AP) — An employee of a Valparaiso Wal-Mart has been charged with theft for repeatedly making purchases to get change from a self-service cash register that was dispensing $20 bills instead of $1 bills.

Police say 24-year-old Christopher Sheets made 10 purchases in 4½ hours Tuesday morning and got about $600.

A store security official said $20 and $1 bills were loaded in the wrong slots of the self-service register. The mistake wasn't noticed until a customer complained that the machine gave a $1 bill in change instead of a 20.

Porter County Jail officials said Sheets was not in custody Friday. It was not known if he had an attorney and there was no listing for Sheets in the Valparaiso telephone directory.

Stealing is stealing, regardless of how much money the company makes. Is this an employee you would want working for you? I do agree that the person who loaded the machine is responsible as well. I hope Jim and sally,(earlier commentors) remember their 'forgiving' attitude when someone steals from them. Walmart... why not a self test after loading to make sure everything is correct?

Right on Ron. It is about doing the right thing...being honest. You knew you didn't have that change coming and you should have reported that to management. No less he was an employee of Walmart. I hope they fire him and glad they are prosecuting him. Why do you people think we pay the prices we do. It is because of a thief like him. Quit acting like he did the right thing.

Hey Ron, About being honest, so the last time you went over the speed limit and didnt get caught, you mailed in some money for the ticket you should of gotten right. "It's about doing the right thing...being honest." isnt that what you said.

People make mistakes all the time. A cashier may give you the wrong change, they may not charge for an item that they happen to not see, but the right of it to let them know when there is a mistakeand clear the problem for or against the customers benefit. By him not letting the proper persons know of the problem and then cashing in on it himself is just out and out "THEFT". Nothing can be said after that.

It's not about Wal-mart being rich. It's not about the person who put the wrong bills in the wrong slots. It's about doing the right thing...being honest. Think about it!

why don't they get the money back and leave well enough alone. the idiot that loades the machine should be the one in trouble.i might be tempted too if 20's were coming out.

God forbid those millionaire executives and their children from Wal-Mart have to be deprived of 600 dollars!
