SOUTH BEND — An accident involving as many as three vehicles closed an eastbound Toll Road lane near mile marker 49 on Saturday.

Indiana State Police dispatch reported that three vehicles, including a semitrailer, were involved in the accident.

No injuries were reported, but the semi's fuel tank was punctured, requiring the lane to be closed for cleanup.

Authorities said traffic was moving smoothly again, with no further accidents reported at 11:40 p.m.

We were lucky as my husband missed the car that hit the guard rail, since there were no lights on the car and it was in the right lane). We were driving behind the semi, (who's gas tank was leaking fuel (we didn't know until we read the report online that the semi's gas tank was punctured). The semi sprayed us with so much fuel that we had to use our windshield wipers. We were surprised and glad to hear that there were no injuries in that accident. What caused the accident??

We must have been driving behind Chris. There was a car who we watch drift in front of the white line three time as we were driving. He then ended up behind us but then passed us (not seeing us) and came into our lane!! My husband laid on the horn, but he kept coming...as we edge toward the embankment I thought we would crash... I was screaming...he finally must have heard the horn, then moved over. Shortly after we saw break lights, we realized that car that almost hit us, hit the railing.

Yesterday morning 10:00am-left Ann Arbor- total ice on roads- saw at least 25 slideoffs or crashes into median barriers- mostly Illinois cars- where do these people take driver's education? semi's were obnoxious too

I know exactly what happened as I was there. A car hit the guard rail, spun around and was stopped in the right lane facing west. You could not see the car as the lights were broken. WE almost ran into them. The car behind hit the wrecked car then the semi behind it hit the second wrecked car. Not the semis fault. Another car was stopped ahead with flashers on, this is why I got over, the second car didn't and caused the it and the semi to crash. The toll road was barely wet at the time.

Joe, first sentence..."closed an eastbound lane".

It's not just the semis. How about those who think that they won't have an accident and continue on at 60 - 75 mph. I agree that 4 wheelers tend to think they have better traction or control, but when they lose it the consequences can be devistating.

is that mile marker 49 east bound or 49 west bound? we who travel the entire state on a daily basis need a little more than that.

Misty why not halt all cars instead of trucks. Trucks are all there because they have to not because they want to.

Who said the accident was caused by the semi

Misty did you read the police report.were you there.dont point fingers till you know what happened and who or what caused it. maybe semi drivers feel the same about 4 wheelers.you just hear about those tho.

I agree that mile marker numbers also need to be associated with the name of a nearby city or road. I know that the South Bend exists are in the 70s, but have no idea where exit 49 is

Isn't it amazing....an accident on the toll road involoving a semi...Let's see...29 additional State Troopers recently hired to "patrol 157 mile section of Indiana Toll Road...but you rarely see them patrolling in inclimate weather!

I really wish you would refer to locations of accidents on the Toll Road at the locations they happened at. Or at least refer to the nearest exit. Who the heck knows where Mile Marker 49 really is? And when the weather gets this bad they should halt all semi traffic BEFORE they kill someone!!!!!
