Authorities in Indiana and Michigan are asking people to stay off the roads Sunday unless absolutely necessary.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office in Mich. reported whiteout conditions due to drifting snow on most north-south roads, making travel dangerous.
Cass County officials also are reporting poor visibility, in some places less then 20 feet, dispatchers said. Secondary roads are especially dangerous, and people there have been asked to stay off the roads if possible.
Along the Indiana Toll Road, officials said whiteout conditions persisted from LaPorte eastbound. A wind ban is in effect for double semi-trailers, dispatchers said.
Michigan State Police said that Interstate 94 was hazardous between Paw Paw and Matawan, with numerous slide-offs reported.
Mishawaka authorities asked that people be aware that streets were refreezing there and the road crews were working as hard as possible, but they weren't expected to make much headway until about 9 a.m.
South Bend Mayor Luecke asked residents to stay off the streets as high winds made driving hazardous. Wind gusts topping 30 mph made visibility nearly zero at times.
South Bend officials stopped snow plows on western Cleveland Road at one point after trucks narrowly missed head-on crashes with vehicles that had crossed the centerline in the whiteout conditions.
There were no reports of serious accidents or cold-weather emergencies early Sunday. However, at about 7:20 a.m., St. Joseph County officials were sent to Chicago Trail and Tamarack Road near the Indiana-Michigan line because a woman was found lying in the snow.
County authorities said the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was found about 200 feet from an abandoned vehicle along the roadway and had been there at least 30 minutes.

So the officer asked me why I was driving on the sidewalk, and I was like, "didn't you hear on the news? You guys want us to stay off the roads!" Sheesh.
