Lake effect snow, whiteout conditions and slideoffs in Southwest Michigan

Authorities in Indiana and Michigan are asking people to stay off the roads Sunday unless absolutely necessary.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office in Mich. reported whiteout conditions due to drifting snow on most north-south roads, making travel dangerous.

Cass County officials also are reporting poor visibility, in some places less then 20 feet, dispatchers said. Secondary roads are especially dangerous, and people there have been asked to stay off the roads if possible.

Along the Indiana Toll Road, officials said whiteout conditions persisted from LaPorte eastbound. A wind ban is in effect for double semi-trailers, dispatchers said.

Michigan State Police said that Interstate 94 was hazardous between Paw Paw and Matawan, with numerous slide-offs reported.

Mishawaka authorities asked that people be aware that streets were refreezing there and the road crews were working as hard as possible, but they weren't expected to make much headway until about 9 a.m.

South Bend Mayor Luecke asked residents to stay off the streets as high winds made driving hazardous. Wind gusts topping 30 mph made visibility nearly zero at times.

South Bend officials stopped snow plows on western Cleveland Road at one point after trucks narrowly missed head-on crashes with vehicles that had crossed the centerline in the whiteout conditions.

There were no reports of serious accidents or cold-weather emergencies early Sunday. However, at about 7:20 a.m., St. Joseph County officials were sent to Chicago Trail and Tamarack Road near the Indiana-Michigan line because a woman was found lying in the snow.

County authorities said the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was found about 200 feet from an abandoned vehicle along the roadway and had been there at least 30 minutes.

So the officer asked me why I was driving on the sidewalk, and I was like, "didn't you hear on the news? You guys want us to stay off the roads!" Sheesh.

Robin..It is not the stores at UP Mall that should get the blame, it's the Mall administrative offices. Any store that closes without permission is fined for their action. The Mall should have been closed yesterday for the safety of all of their employees.

For the folks at Honeywell, how did your bosses seem to get to work on time? You could have taken one of you sick/personal days. Oh yeah, you probably have already burnt those up for the other times you didn't want to go to work. It isn't a school, it is a business. Get to work!

Hey everybody, pop the champagne corks, South Bend schools will be closed Monday!!!! What will everyone complain about now? They've really let everyone down in doing this. Think of all the space that will have to filled in the South Bend Tribune's Voice of the People section with the absence of the SBCSC's perceived misguided judgment call to be rehashed 800 times. Terrible, just terrible.

I went out about 4PM & it seemed like a normal Sunday afternoon. People milling around, shopping etc. as usual. As long as you don't drive like a maniac, not much of a problem. Of course I have one of those jobs where someone has absolutely has to be there, so I'm used to driving in lousy conditions. Just wanted to thank the folks at the library for not making a phone call to alert the media they were closed. There were 2 other cars checking as well when I drove by to check.

It's crazy to be out unless absolutely necessary. My husband found this out yesterday am--then it was mainly slushy-but he ended up rolling his truck down a 30 foot ravine. Landed on its side. Took two tow trucks to get him out. Luckily he is alive. He has definately had a wake up call.

Honeywell shouldn't be writing up people for coming in late especially in weather like this!
