Local Christian group plans transitional housing for inmates

Potter's House of Deliverance Ministers worship with female inmates.

A new program in the St. Joseph County Jail helps prepare female inmates for transitional living.

By WSBT News1

SOUTH BEND — Imagine being sent to jail for committing a crime, then getting released back into the same environment that got you in trouble in the first place. That's the reality for many people who are incarcerated. Now a local Christian group wants to provide transitional housing for female inmates after they're released.

The program is called Beauty for Ashes. The idea is to help give the inmates a new beginning and a place where they can be taught structure and boundaries.

You wouldn't expect to hear singing and clapping at a jail — a place where criminals are punished for breaking the law.

But four days a week a handful of inmates go to church inside the St. Joseph County Jail. Ministers from South Bend's Potter's House of Deliverance lead them in song and worship.

"A lot of these women have high goals," one inmate told WSBT. "They have high hopes and dreams. They want to become something."

"I guess 49 percent of the women that come here are homeless," explained Beauty for Ashes founder Rachele Benn. "So they leave homeless. So when they're pushed back out into society they're left to go back where they started — back to their prostitution, back to those places that helped bring them here to begin with."

That's why Rachele Benn wants to open Beauty for Ashes — a transitional home for women who are trying to break the gripping cycle of drugs, bad decisions and the fear that they're not good enough for anyone.

"What I learned from it is to receive God with open arms and He loves me, you know?" explained one inmate. "I think that's the biggest fear, that the Lord looks down on us."

For former inmates who want to live in the transitional housing, there are strict policies they have to follow. For example, the women have to begin their spiritual journey while they're in jail and show spiritual growth.

They also have to fill out an application and go through an interview process. But there are also a lot of rules while they're living at the home: no drugs or alcohol, and they have to sign in and out with exactly where they're going to be. It's designed to show them structure and boundaries.

The plans for Beauty for Ashes are in place, but organizers are missing a crucial part to complete the project.

"We need a home," said Rachele Benn. "I believe there is somebody out there who can provide this home for these women and offer them hope and a second chance."

If you're interested in giving donations or helping with Beauty for Ashes, the organizers want you to contact them.

Just happened to stumble across this. Never knew this place existed. And what's so funny is this is something that has always "qwirked" my spirit. "So people go to jail, THEN WHAT???" Don't know what role I could play, but please keep me informed of needs. I am a self-employed "professional organizer" and want to be a part of a wonderful ministry any way I can.

I must first say that Beauty for Ashes is a wonderful cause reaching out to those who are seeking what they may have lost along the bumpy road their lives have traveled. It truly breaks my heart however to see comments that convey a negative opinion/message towards something with such positive potential. I myself have visited the Potters House of Deliverence and what they say is true it is not about the "religion" it's about the rekindling of the "relationship" with GOD that matters most.

To superfluous: This is a Christ centered ministry. We accept everyone with the love of Christ. But when building a home that offers stability, peace, love, and most importantly a Godly Foundation. Do you think the the above mentioned would be comfortable and adaptable to what we are trying to build this ministry on? It would be like mixing water and oil! But we love the Jew, the muslim, and the atheist. We have to use wisdom when creating a atmosphere in a home.

What if an inmate identifies as Jewish, Muslim, or as an atheist? Are they still given assistance from Potters House?

I would first like to Thank WSBT for taking the time to run a story of such great importance. I have ministered in the jails and have seen first hand the girls that want change in their lives. But so many times people minister to these people and than forget about them. They are like babies and need to be nurtured and fed. This is what this home is all about. We plan to take them and bring them up as mighty warriors for Christ. I am so proud to be a part of this ministry.

A relationship w/ Christ is not promoting a regligon. Promoting a religon would be a specific demoniation, i.e. Catholic, Methodist, etc. A relationship with Christ will get you to heaven, not just attending a church..

Thank you for being a vessel for God to work through Rachele. I am a bit confused by Kevin Langford's comments. Force them to "our" religion? If no one else is there for them the same pimp's and john's will gladly give them what they need for their religion. These people are going to prison and extending a hand and their time Kevin, what are you doing for them? Crying about "your" tax dollars, how pitiful...

It saddens me that people like Kevin would make an uneducated comment. Kevin, do you consider yourself to be a good person? Have you ever lied? Have you ever stole, have you ever looked at a person with lust?

Some of you that have commented on this story may not realize this is the life that these women have been handed. Grew up without a loving parent or guardian, etc. We want to help them understand that they do not have to live this way and that they are worth more. If more people would reach out to those in need the world would be a better place, but this generation is the all about me generation. This is going to be a winning situation for everyone involved and God will bless those who help

We are not promoting religion in anyway. What we are promoting is a relationship with Christ. We are helping these women to break the cycle of defeat, so they can rise up to be women that are productive and a contribution to society, therefore freeing up the tax dollars spent to house them in jails and prisons. Seems like a win, win situation to me!

It seems like a really good idea, but why is it just limited to just females. Men are faced with many of the same problems and there is no safe haven for them. Keep up the positive work thought.

Let's see, we take people with no place to go when they get out of prison and tell them "we'll give you a place to stay if you turn to our religion". Sounds like a captive audiance to me. I wonder how the people running this program would react if Iran did this to there prisoners? One more thing. Is this program even legal being held in a state run prison useing my tax dollars? If they really cared about these women they wouldn't force religion on them.
