Federal government tax rebates

SOUTH BEND — The federal government will be sending you a check by mid-May. Congress approved the $170 billion economic stimulus plan last week. It's designed to boost the economy.

One-time rebates will be sent to more than 100 million low- and middle-income families.

Congressman Joe Donnelly says one group of people in particular is likely to really help put the economy back on track.

At 76 years old, Mary Ann Turner loves showing off her grandkids, entertaining guests, and just plain being retired.

“I do not have to get up at 5 o'clock in the morning like I did for 13 years,” she said.

But living on a fixed income as the cost of groceries, gas, and everything else continues to climb, can be a challenge.

“I have to budget my money which — I'm a spender!” she said.

So lawmakers are banking on retirees like Mary Ann to help boost the economy and keep the country out of a recession.

Monday, Congressman Joe Donnelly announced low-income seniors have been included to receive tax rebates this spring. Now, Social Security recipients will get at least $300.

And Donnelly says it's this group of people that could help most.

“It's been shown that well over 70 percent of the funds that go out in the stimulus package come back in the form of economic activity,” he explained. “At the senior level, over 90 percent of the funds go back into the economy. So probably more than any other group, they would be a target group of an economic stimulus package.”

Here's a look at how much taxpayers will get:

  • Single filers who earn less than $75,000 a year will get rebates up to $600.
  • Couples earning less than $150,000 will get a rebate of up to $1,200.
  • Parents will get $300 per child.

The checks should be in the mail by mid-May.

these checks will only help us get some bills cought back up! and then what?.it starts all over again. i make make good money but still not enough to pay bills.. out of billions of dollars, its a shame we would settle for so less. the government knows they will get it right back and at the same time they dont care weather or not my children will eat the next day!

I'll take the check but I feel it is a temporary fix. In 6 months we'll be in the same situation we are in now. We have to declare this rebate on 08 federal taxes as income just like we did the first time this occured.

hello, we all need a break from paying out high taxes. don't we all agree we need a permanent fix, not a temporary one.i'll take the rebate check, yes i will, but i truelly agree on a permanent tax cut on paying out too much in taxes. why not add taxes for purchases? why have outrageous taxes on living expenses? things like all utilities, gas, food, and shelter all should be affordable for all.purchasing of a new car, boat ect........these are the things that should be hit hard .they are for fun.

How will these checks affect our Social Security checks in the near future?

Joni-Basically its like the check we received years back. Depending on how much you make in 2008, when you do your taxes, a certain percentage will come out of your refund. So its just an advance from next years tax return.

THIS SOUNDS GOOD BUT I READ ON CNN.COM THAT "THE CHECKS ARE AN ADVANCE ON NEXT YEAR'S REFUNDS, AND MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE MONEY, WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM TAXPAYERS' REFUNDS IN 12 MONTHS' TIME." IF SOMEONE COULD EXPLAIN IT TO ME I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW

Bailing out the idiots that got themselves so far into debt they can't get out. I don't think anyone who did not save for retirement should get spit. And by the way, the Lord is not providing this money. I AM! The working stiff who did save!
