BMV License Meeting

SOUTH BEND — Thousands of Hoosiers could lose their driver's license at the end of the month because they didn't provide proof of their identity. There's confusion in the Hispanic community about why this is being done. So the Bureau of Motor Vehicles tried to ease those concerns Tuesday night.

A BMV spokesperson says ethnicity was never a factor. He says they went through all records and sent letters to people whose name on their driver's license did not match Social Security records to prevent fraud.

"I have to take my children to school every day. I have to drive everywhere to live, so does my husband," said Cristina Gomez.

Immigration attorney Rudy Monterrosa says the problem is some people don't have multiple forms of identification.

"The letter they first send out says we are trying to figure out if your name matches. When it does, they say show me other documents to prove you are in the country legally," he said.

Many, like Gomez, have a Social Security number, but no residency card. Monterrosa believes Hispanics are being targeted, but the BMV says not so.

"No BMV record has any indication of ethnicity. We don't know the ethnicity of people. If you go to the BMV, you will find nothing to indicate race, ethnicity, or national orientation. It's not important to us," said Dennis Rosebrough, BMV Communications Director.

The deadline to verify your Social Security number if you got a letter was January 31. The BMV is still processing some of the paperwork. So, if you a got a letter and have NOT verified your information, you can still do it.

One final comment. I'd caution people who are quick to say, deport them all. Let's not forget that our nation was built on the backs of immigrants, George Washington being our nation's first! I'd encourage you all to become well informed before attacking those who took our country's promise to heart -- that if you come to the United States, you can achieve the American Dream.

These letters purport to simply request a match in the name and the social security number. People who had VALID licenses who obtained them LEGALLY went to BMV and proved EXACTLY that: they had a valid social security card that matched their name. At that point, BMV took it upon themselves to request more information and THEN invalidate their license. Let's not also forget that ALL OF US enjoy the protection of the Constitution. In many instances, these PRIVILEGES were revoked w/o DUE PROCESS!

When you lose you license you have to go with more that one piece of paper showing your name and address, this I know as a fact as my son had his vehicle stolen with his billfold in the car and you would not believe what he had to go through. I agree if you are legal you should not worry!! but there are more here illegal than legal and yes they are so good for our economy!! show me how? you can't pick up a paper without reading how many were arrested for DUI's false informing no drivers license.

Here we are again. It's so unbelievable to me the Hispanics believe they are being targeted. First get legal and you won't have to worry. Stealing someones identity is a crime! If as Americans we did it we would be sitting in jail. Secondly, driving is not a right its a privledge! Why should they be exempt from our laws, when we abide by them or get thrown in prision? Of course they have stolen our rights as legal citizens, and they are already illegal, why should they follow our laws? Disgusting

They are already driving without licenses and insurance, the licenses and insurance that they might have are illegal because they were fraudulently obtained, if they cant furnish the documents for a license, they cannot furnish the documents for employment. They are here illegally, everything they do is illegal, they should be caught and deported,. The sooner the better.

My mom and I came from Germany... with ALL our paperwork. We jumped through hoops to make sure we can stay. (Naturalization is next) :) This has nothing to do with race... It has to do with having your paper work in order. If there were a discrepancy, I would want to know about it. Maybe this should have been done a long time ago. If you are illegal, get legal or get out. Mr Gomez... if you and your wife are not legal, stop complaining!

I have taken the liberty of contacting the Indiana Attorney General's office of Steve Carter to inform him of Mrs. Gomez's admission that her husband "invented his Social Security number." With any luck, driving won't be an issue with Mr. Gomez because he might just get a free ticket to his country of origin (wherever that may be)! Notice to all illegals,...you will be found and sent back to your country of origin. I think we're all tired of: Pushing ONE for English.

I am not Hispanic and I got a letter too. I am white. I have lived in the same place for 8 years and have no idea why they sent me a letter except I know the BMV messed up my info when I first moved here. I think the Hispanic community changing this into a race issue is deplorable and opportunistic. Get a clue and follow the law or go back to a country that has no laws.

I am a white, woman...born & raised in the USA...I got one of these letters too. I never changed my name after being married ten years ago. I feel this is a security measure for our country. Does any one remember 9/11? Yes, it was a pain in the rear to go do this, but well worth the added safety to us all.

The South Bend Tribune had more information on Mrs. Gomez. She said, Her husband invented his Social Security number. WHAT!!! Are you kidding me? I hope ICE is listening. These people come here and blatantly break our laws and she, her husband and 5 kids have the nerve to show up at a BMV meeting to complain about losing a license her husband should have never received in the first place. Mrs. Gomez went on to say "We will not stop driving because we have to drive." That says it all!

People want to start calling this racially motivated or whatever. Why is it so hard to believe that many government employees, over many years, have made many typos, resulting in many records being incorrect? I am sure that many Hispanics are affected but so are many people who had name changes because of marriage or adoption. I think it's a good idea for a business to verify and correct their records occasionally. I know 2 non-hispanics who received those letters.

In all reality if all illegals were issued drivers license this doesn't make them leagal. In all reality it protects us Americans,Latinos, all races who are here leagally. This just makes its better for all of us to have insurance, that can cover if anyone was in an accident. COME ON PEOPLE THINK HAVE COMMON SENSE.

I think this is great! I wish Michigan would do it.

I never changed my name on my Social Security card when I got married 7 years ago. A girl in my office never changed hers when she got married 13 years ago. We both recieved the letter. By chance we both had already changed our Social Security because we had to have passports for work. We just took our information to the BMV and the matter was resloved. We are both white, so I do not think it is a race issue.

Now people will be driving without license and without car insurance. Great! Please make this more difficult for people to comply with these requirements.

WAY TO GO BMV. If, as a by-product of their efforts, 50,000 illegals are discovered and FINALLY sent home, then I consider this a hugely successful program. The BMV is simply clarrifying "clerical errors" (wink) and I, for one, applaud them. THE BMV RULES!!

This is so true why is ever one upset you should of dont this in the first place you see people stuff dont match because its some fraud going on and this way everbody will be legal and not drive around on paper plates for a whole year because we all know they can not be traced .People get real just do as you are told and it wont be any problem

Wednesday, Feb 13 at 3:34 AM BMV Employee wrote ...

These letters are not to target anyone. In all reality your name should match identically on every piece of identification you own. Why have a different name on your soc. card than your license? This is not difficult and should have been done in the first place. If you lose your license due to this it is your own fault.

Call it what you want or call it what you are told to call it to be "politically correct". This is NOT for identity theft. It is "an agressive immigration reform plan" as stated by B.Obama(who also voted for this)in the democratic debate in California last week. It is a very mean spirited heartless act that does not reflect the character of American people. I wonder what the other options were or could be that we as the people have no say so in again. "the people run the govt." yeah right.

There should be no concern if you are here legally, just provide what is required.
