ELKHART CO. — Elkhart County police are paying closer attention to local roads. They're hoping to cut down on the number of deadly accidents. If you think you know the rules of the road, police warn you might want to make sure you're following them.

WSBT cameras were rolling at a simple two-way stop in Elkhart County as car after car rolled through.

"They're trying to drive correctly but they get in a hurry," explained Elkhart County Police Capt. Sean Holmes. "They don't pay attention. They pull up to stop signs and they think they stop. It's about perspective."

Most drivers are in too much of a hurry to notice the small cross sitting at the intersection of County Road 11 and County Road 30. But it represents the stark reality of the county-wide traffic problem.

Capt. Holmes said historically, Elkhart County sees between 30 and 50 traffic fatalities every year. Last year there were 49.

Many of them happened at intersections.

"They pull out and before they know it there's a car on top of them," said Holmes. "And then you've got to make a choice: either go or stop. And a lot of times they don't have time and they get hit."

Many of those drivers are breaking the law. At any stop sign, drivers are required to come to a complete stop and proceed with caution. Holmes said a complete stop means tires aren't moving and the speedometer is at zero.

In the coming weeks, you can expect to see anywhere from 5 to 20 extra officers on the roads, reminding drivers about speed limits and complete stops.

The Fatal Crash Reduction Enforcement grant that funds this extra enforcement is also part of increased patrols in construction zones and along school bus routes.

so let me get this straight. we are going to concentrate on this issue for a couple of weeks and expect a big difference. i drive those cr everyday and can count on one hand when i have seen a police car on those roads and now all of a sudden we are concerned with it. patrol them on a regular basis, that might help control the excessive speeders. just a suggestion, you guys do what you want to do though.

Is the red light a warning light? I notice more & more people in left turn lanes still turning after the light was red for a good 30 seconds or in straight lane just running the red. Can't we all just slow down? That would save some lives. SPEED KILLS.

You could put a police car at every intersection and there will still be accidents. Don't these do-gooders have anything else to do. Sounds like they need more money. Get everyone wearing seatbelts, no more money comming in. Find something else to harass the public with.

I used to be one of those drivers who didn't come to a full stop at intersections. A few months ago, a very nice police officer stopped me & pointed out what I had done. I hadn't even realized I was doing it. I could have been one of those fatalaties. Now I notice other drivers doing it all the time!

In Marshall county I came 3 inches from getting rear ended by a car doing 60 on 6th road near Rose road after a ice storm a month ago. I stopped at the T intersection stop sign, looked BOTH ways TWICE like I always do,then turned right. About 30 seconds later,Im doing 25-30 mph on the ice I look in my rear view mirror and out of nowhere there is a car doing at least 60 coming up FAST behind me. He attempts to pass me and looses it-spinning into the ditch and almost hit my rear. I didnt help him.

These county roads are bad spots, they need to look into more 4 way stop signs at a few of the intersections. by the time you look one way and then the other and take off someone is zooming over a hill and theres no way you could tell they were coming. very dangerous situations. and not because someone didn't stop and look
