Giveaway of emergency contraception angers anti-abortion group

MISHAWAKA (AP) — A free giveaway of emergency contraception doses at Planned Parenthood health centers in Indiana cities with large college populations has angered an anti-abortion group, whose leader calls it "irresponsible."

The giveaways are timed to remind young adults of the importance of responsible sexual behavior as spring break nears for many colleges and universities, said Steve Carr, a spokesman for Planned Parenthood of Indiana.

He stressed that emergency contraception should not be relied on as a main source of birth control, just for emergency situations to prevent an unintended pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood announced Friday that between Feb. 26 and April 8, its health centers in Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Hammond, Lafayette, Madison, Mishawaka, Muncie, Terre Haute and Valparaiso will be giving out emergency contraception doses, while supplies last.

Indiana Right to Life executive director Mike Fichter told the South Bend Tribune on Friday that Planned Parenthood's actions are "irresponsible."

"They're giving kids a false sense of security for those who are potentially going to engage in risky sexual behavior," Fichter said.

He said emergency contraception does not prevent disease and there's little evidence that it has any significant impact on abortion or unintended pregnancy rates.

"This is all about Planned Parenthood gaining free advertising to build its customer base among sexually active teens," Fichter said in the statement.

Planned Parenthood officials recommend that women and couples back up their birth control, keeping emergency contraception in their medicine cabinets in case "the condom breaks, you miss your regular dose of birth control or have unprotected sex."

The pills can prevent ovulation or a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus and leading to pregnancy.

Fichter said that if implantation of a fertilized egg is prevented, the drug kills a human life, which is abortion.

He said Indiana Right to Life will work with its chapter in St. Joseph County — where Mishawaka is located — to get the word out about the negatives of emergency contraception. He said the U.S. the Food and Drug Administration licensed it but is "doing a disservice."

Carr said many people confuse emergency contraception with the RU486 abortion pill or mifepristone — which ends a pregnancy. He said "emergency contraception is contraception. It's right there in the name. It's contraception."

He said that most of the emergency contraception services are accessed by young adults, with the median age being 23.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion...and to SS it has nothin to do with maternal instinct i had a friend whose parents made her have an abortion or else they took everything away from her including her family...so sometimes its not just what your saying there are many other factors and unless you are in the situation you have no clue

Has any one read HUMANAE VITAE an encyclical about abortion and contraception it is a grave sin, basically over time sex would only be used for pleasure and not for procreation, thus using women only for pleasure. Who remember Onan in the bible who spilt his seed on the ground and was struck dead for this form of contraception.

I had an ultrasound at only 6 weeks gestation when I was pregnant for my daughter. I was able to watch her heart beating on the ultrasound and I was completely amazed. She was definitely not a blob. She was my baby.

To SS - I would happily take in someone's unwanted child. I know this is a huge revelation, but folks need to understand that when they have sex - a pregnancy might occur. If you don't want to get pregnant, use a condom. If you do have an unwanted pregnancy, have the heart to give your baby to someone who will love him or her. There are plenty of people out there, myself included. Abortion isn't birth control, it's murder.

LMAO! I admit it. I am a nazi because I want to inflict my PRO CHOICE opinion on everybody. To ABORTION IS MURDER: It IS a shame that so many young women lack the maternal instinct to follow through with a pregnancy. I don't believe that forcing them to bear an unwanted child is the solution. In my opinion, if you are going to force the birth of an unwanted child, you should have at least 1 foster child in your home. If you are not going to be part of a solution stop causing problems.

i have the best way of solving our abortion problems with many unmarried people (teens) all you have to do is superglue a cork in it, should resolve the problem in no time

Ok, Kristin, what is your definition of a baby? And why would your definition supersede the scientific definition? Aren't you just arbitrarily assigning personhood? And "going too far", it didn't say "fertile egg", it said FERTILIZED Egg... egg sperm= BABY!

i dont think people are offended that pro lifers love children that has nothing to do with it..people just believe different things....a group of cells are not a baby..

I was impressed to see how many heated comments have been posted here. I know this is a passionate subject, but what is it solving to attack eachother? Can comments on a news site stay about opinions of the news and not opinions of other commenters that you've never really met? Let's discuss the issue not eachother. No problem is solved through personal attacks.

Wow, it's hard to believe people are offended that we pro-lifers love children in all stages of development, in or out of the womb. How sad for you.

It's sad that so many mothers no longer possess maternal instincts. A baby is a baby from the moment of conception.

I just don't get some people! Our parents, their parents and so on have been having sex at young ages but was never talked about or ignored! I don't endorse having sex at a young age but this is human nature and this is why the human race continues! Don't we want to prevent pregnancies so there are no abortions? Does the phrase "Baby Boomers" ring a bell? Like everything else in life we teach our kids right from wrong and it is up to them from there. That is the way it has been for generations!

a fertil egg is NOT a baby..otherwise, any woman or young girl that hasn't had sex in a couple of months and ovulated would have murdered a lot of babies!! get real and get your facts straight Mr. Ficher

Would his feelings change if his 16 year old daddy came home and said "You're going to be a grandpa"? Unwanted pregnancies produce far more than just a baby......neglect, abuse, babies left in dumpsters, you name it. Just read the paper and listen to the news. "Just say no" doesn't work here.

Do these right to lifers not have enough going on in their own lives that they have so much time to worry about what everyone else is doing? Mind your own business. Why don't you show some concern for children that have already left the womb? Oh, that's right, they're on their own, you're only concerned about the one that are in utero.
