SOUTH BEND — The April 15 deadline to file your income taxes is a little less than two months away, but it’s never too early to start. There is some important information you should be thinking about now.

Many tax professionals say they’re getting a lot of questions lately about the government rebate checks. Local Jackson Hewitt Manager Pam Zahrt said many people want to know what the check is and how it affects them.

The amount on the check has to do with your marital status, the age of your children and how much money you make, Zahrt said. There are also minimum and a maximum earned incomes that do not qualify for the rebate check.

“Also this year they’re considering for people who have social security benefits, [and] there’s disability for veterans,” explained Zahrt. “So people who normally maybe didn’t have to file a federal return need to come in and find out if they qualify for the rebate. You have to file a federal return in order to qualify for the rebate.”

Zahrt also said the sooner you file, the better. You have to file an income tax return in order to receive a rebate check. Zarht said the government hasn't released an official schedule yet, but those who file their income taxes sooner, will likely be able to get both their government rebate check and their income tax refund check sooner.

“If you have a refund coming, the sooner you file obviously you’re going get your money back [for income taxes],” she said. “And if you owe, it’s going to allow you some time to plan for where you’re going to come up with that money if you didn’t expect to owe.”

If you have questions about filing, tax professionals suggest taking your information to a local tax expert.

Only because there not americans, like the rest of us, stop being selfish because they come to this country to look for a better life to support there own, or should we prefer illegals who come & dont pay taxes & currupt this country.

I can't believe the insane jealously that exist between the haves and have nots. It seems some of the have nots want to label those of us making more than 30k a year as haves. Anyone who WORKS for a livingl, who is retired and DID WORK, or who has WORKED and no is disabled should get a rebate regardless of what their economic status is.

Seems like there are alot of people here looking for a governement handout. This should never have been given to people who are leaches on society (Make less than 30K per a year or are on some form of welfare) This was supposed to be a rebate not a handout as it is. What a waste of our tax dollars. Our tax system needs to be revised. Those who earn more should keep more, as they earned it.

To Single mom, you should get his "handout" besides your own, if he is behind on child support.(That's the way I read the rules on the "handout".)

I make $7.00/hr 40 hrs/wk, $280/wk, Approx. $14,000/yr and go to school. I love it when I get "Handouts", or foodstamps or medical for my kids, I can't even afford the gas and ride my bike to work. To all you "Rich" people, who are gripping, the people that serve you, make your clothes, ring up your purchases, pour your beer would like to thank Uncle Sam for this. We all don't make $30k or more. However, I'd rather see them make my X pay his child support.

Not sure if anyone is still reading this article, but it is not correct. The IRS announced on May 1st that if you filed your taxes via RAL (rapid anticipation loan)or the filing fees were deducted from your refund, you will be getting a paper check. So those who filed this way, are not getting direct deposit, and will not recieve the stimulus payment anytime soon. The schedule is on the IRS website. I believe most Americans are in this boat, but I may be incorrect.

And yet because my brother decided not to go to college, is 18, works full time and is claimed by my parents, he still gets one? I have college loans to pay! I just don't understand our government.

Nick needs to get a clue. I am married with three children and made $143,500 last year. Big deal, when we first got married I made $26,500 and she made $24,000 but you know what, we lived simple and we worked hard. We did not have the debt we do now and whenever we bought something, we paid cash and really appreciated it because we knew how hard we worked to get it. Fast forward 12 years and now we make great money, but I liked the simpler times. ANYONE WHO WORKS DESERVES THE CHECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, Feb 27 at 7:43 AM working stiff wrote ...

This is in response to Nick. I work my tail end off and make under 30k a year, but I also work with people that make a six figure income. To tell you the truth they do less work then the lower income. I am not saying that all high paying jobs have less labor involved with them, but obviously some of them do. As far as the comment of "they earned more they should keep more" that is why the economy is the way it is. That is also why the IRS is looking harder at those larger incomes.

Thursday, Feb 21 at 11:45 AM MEG wrote ...

Well, Nick in response to your rude comment. Maybe you just don't understand that any working person should qualify for the rebate. They are actually trying to better themselves. They are tax paying citizens who atleast make the effort to work. Unlike the millions of Americans who are on welfare with no good cause. I make more than $30,000 a year and my family and I have a good life. That doesn't give me the right to degrade people who make less. Instead we give thanks for what we have!!!!

Thursday, Feb 21 at 4:16 AM Amber wrote ...

This is also in response to Nick. You have no good right to judge anyone at all.
