ELKHART — Sturgis Iron & Metal is being fined $2,500 after what residents reported as a loud explosion early Tuesday morning, city officials said.

Neighbors and city council members heard the boom about 6:05 a.m. at the company’s recycling yard on Oakland Avenue, which houses the Mega Shredder. The Mega Shredder has been a point of contention in the city, said Arvis Dawson, executive assistant to the mayor.

Mayor Dick Moore is waiting to hear back from the company this week regarding a solution to the noise in the residential neighborhood, he said Tuesday afternoon.
