SOUTH BEND — Prosecutors filed charges Thursday against a Washington High School student accused of taking a handgun to the school Feb. 12.

The juvenile, 14, was charged with handgun carrying at school, a Class C felony if committed by an adult, and possession of a firearm at school, a Class D felony if committed by an adult. He is being held at the Juvenile Justice Center.

The .25-caliber handgun was found on the student after a school security officer took him to the school office for a dress code violation, police said. The gun was not loaded.

The student has been suspended from the school pending due process. His initial court appearance is Feb. 29.
