MISHAWAKA — Drivers should expect more delays and detours ahead. The reopening of Main Street is pushed back again. This time, it's because of the weather.
Main Street has been closed between Jefferson and Broadway since October. The street has been scheduled to reopen three times since then.
Now, it won't reopen until May.
After this many delays, many people are starting to think about the Logan Street bridge project which was completed almost one year late.
Mayor Jeff Rea says that's not the case. He says work is continuing with other phases of the project, so the underpass should still be completed by 2009 as scheduled.
The quarter mile stretch of road was supposed to reopen in November. That was delayed until February because it was too cold to install cable.
And this month, temporary railroad tracks weren't installed correctly, pushing the reopening back again to March.
Before Main Street is reopened, engineers will need to patch all the cracks. They could use cold patch, but they've decided to use hot asphalt, which won't become available until April 15. That means this road will remain closed until May 2.
"We have had set backs on the construction, but the work hasn't stopped," said Mayor Jeff Rea, R-Mishawaka. "The weather plays a factor, but we are optimistic. In the long run, we hope to save money and we will be completed on time if not early."
To keep the project on schedule, work will also begin on Broadway, which means there will be more detours.
On Broadway, northbound car traffic will be detoured east on Mishawaka Avenue and north on Division Street.
Northbound truck traffic on SR 331 will be detoured at the U.S. 20 bypass east to Elm Road, north on Capital to McKinley Highway, and west to Grape Road.
The existing southbound detour will be extended south on Liberty Drive to Mishawaka Avenue.

JT..you sure have your idiot degree. Rea is not out there building the bridge and he does not own the companies that are. He has no control over how it goes other then awarding the contract and the progress being monitored. The rail road has a HUGE part in this project and its not all the city. To Anonymous...the Logan street bridge was a county project..not city. The city is not responsible for bridges.
