ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -- A St. Joseph County neighborhood is on the lookout for anything suspicious after 13 burglaries over the last few weeks. And police say they think they're all connected.

While Renne Langdon was at work two weeks ago, thieves broke into her home by busting through the front door.

"It looked like they hit it with their shoulder," Langdon said.

Even with her two St. Bernards inside, thieves still managed to steal her TV and computer. Langdon's home was one of 12 hit. Neighbors say the string of break-ins is unusual for the area, and some believe it's the work of professionals.

"It's very scary since they're so organized. If it was helter skelter, that'd be one thing, but they've hit so many home around here," said neighbor Tom Olkowski.

Which is why neighbors are relying on each other to stay safe.

"Because of this threat everybody's looking out for everybody. If there's a truck in a yard that shouldn't be there, we're calling the owner up to find out what's going on with that truck," said Olkowski.

Investigators say because of the what the thieves are taking, they think it may be the work of a group of criminals. Police are stepping across patrols in the area.

I live in Granger. Any time I have had to make a call to the St Joseph County PD they have responded quickly! I can say nothing bad about them. I guess, for me it is a case of is my relationship with my neighbors that they would notice something that is not right, and call the police for me if I were unaware.

Patrolling the gas station huh, very interesting. I haven't heard of any problems at that gas station. And partrolling to me means driving by, not hanging in the parking lot or inside for more than a half hour at a time.

Ted- I do apologize, I should have been more clear. I do not see more than 1-2 County officers at the 7-11 on Mayflower and Sample. The majority and my complaint, is the number of SOUTH BEND cops who hang out there regularly. I often go down Mayflower on my way home from work anywhere between 5-8 PM on any given night. I can put money on the fact that every time I go by there are at least 3 SBPD officers there. DO SOME WORK!!!!!

When you see a patrol car in a parking lot, you are not looking at Sherlock Holmes wasting his time; you are looking at the muscle of the department. The detectives are actually solving the case. So don't get bent out of shape when you see two patrol cars in a parking lot yakking at eating donuts. Those aren't the brains of the operation and there's nothing they can do until they have something to act on.

Whenever I call the nonemergency line about a noise violation, I have to call twice because the first time they don't bother, gambling that the problem will go away on its own. I always have to call a second time, then it takes exactly 20 minutes for a patrol car to come out and the problem is solved... *if* they were able to understand my directions to the source of the noise - and I've learned to make it simple because if I say too much, they get all confused and don't know where to go.

First of all, if you want to gripe online, learn how to spell properly. Secondly, whoever is doing this is not outfitted with a tee-shirt exclaiming their dirty deeds. And Yes, the police need a break--they need help figuring out who did all of this. If you have children, I pray that you are not the ones running around deciding how many cop cars are at 7-11. You should be nurturing your children, so they don't do these things. Stop being antagonist and help the police, who deserve their breaks.

Folks, patrol officers aren't like regular office people. The squad cars are their offices. Unfortunately, the cars don't have bathrooms or break rooms. Also, do you shut the heat off to your office everytime you leave it? Why should the officers shut their heat off? Many of the cars die after a short time with all the equipment now in them.

You can't drive by a 7-11 in South Bend without 2 or 3 cops being there. Put down the coffee and doughnuts and start patrolling the streets.

SOME OF YOU PEOPLE NEED HELP THEY LEAVE THEIR RUN FOR A REASON AND DON'T BE MAD AT THE SHERIFF BE MAD A YOUR COUNTY COUNSEL THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SCREWED THIS WHOLE THING UP NOT THE SHERIFF OR THE CITY OR THE STATE MAYBE YOU SHOULD ATTEND A COUNTY COUNSEL MEETING ONCE IN A WHILE AN THAT WOULD HELP SOME OF YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS

Guess there will be even less cars on the street since the sheriff is taking six officers off the street to move them into the transportation division because he can't staff the jail because of those 12 hour shifts. I've heard some officers say this is the worst administration they have ever seen and none of them have a clue about what they are doing. That's also why they have the former chief doing the financial duties the current chief is suppose to do. The sheriff should resign.

Anytime I have had to deal with the St. Joseph County Police, they have been very helpful and FAST! I had a break in while on vacation, my front door was kicked in and the house ransacked and of course anything of value was taken. Although my stuff was never found and no one was ever arrested the police were kind. With their help and my neighbors I feel protected out here in the county. I take steps to help protect my self now and set my alarm everytime I leave....My 2 German Shepards help to

Never fails to amaze me how many cop haters there are, but they sure won't hesitate to call when they need them. Before it's said, I pay part of my salary too.

Ted where did you learn how to spell? Cops are entitled to breaks just as anyone else who has a job. Do you really expect them to work their shift without stopping to get a drink, to go to the bathroom, to get something to eat? And maybe they are patroling the gas station.

Take some of the Sheriffs tax bonus and put 6 more patrol cars out there! I know there are a few experienced deputies who are currently being forced to work court house security. This county needs a change fast!

Just for the record, you naver see more than two county cars at the 7-11 at Mayfllower and Sample, and generally they are not nthwere more than a few minutes. A bathroom break and maybe a quick coffee. Quite frequently these officers are doing their paperwork. On the other, hand up to eight South Bend cars have been seen at this location at the same time. Explanation: South Bend police chief is not elected as is the Sheriff.

Bill, last I knew, breaks lasted 10-15 minutes not an hour or 2. Most of the people who live in this area are tired of driving by that gas station and seeing 3 to 4 police cars there on a regular basis, no matter what time it is.
