SOUTH BEND — On Ewing Street in South Bend, the cars were stuck in the intersection at Ironwood Road. In Marshall County, emergency dispatchers said the snow was deep and they'd already had six minor accidents by 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. And in Michigan, the state police couldn't stress enough that people need to take their time.

"We're just telling people to use caution because it's slippery out there," police said.

Fortunately, authorities said there had been no serious accidents before the morning commute started. But road conditions were deteriorating, and plows were having trouble keeping up.

By 7:45 a.m., emergency dispatchers with South Bend said that the downhill grade on Miami Road near Ireland and Ridgedale was treacherous. Traffic was backed up, with a van sideways in the road and at least one school bus involved. There were no injuries reported.

St. Joseph County authorities said they had no serious injury accidents either, but at least 10 crashes had occurred since 6:30 a.m.

Among them was a crash on U.S. 31 southbound near S.R. 4.

Just before 8 a.m., a semi-truck and van collided. County dispatchers said at least one person had non-life-threatening injuries, but few other details were available about the cause of the accident.

A jackknifed semi-truck near M-205 and Redfield Road, east of Edwardsburg, had the road blocked after the 5:20 a.m. accident, but crews were busy clearing it, Cass County dispatchers said.

And in Elkhart County, dispatchers reported accidents with injuries on C.R. 6 and C.R. 10. The crashes were not serious.

Indiana State Police said the entire Toll Road was slick for its entire length and covered in slush. About 15 minor accidents or slide-offs had been reported before 6 a.m.

"Vehicles are traveling very slowly on them," police said of the highway lanes.

To the south, Kosciusko officials said two accidents on U.S. 30 and one on S.R. 15 were causing traffic hassles for early-morning drivers. By 8 a.m., the county had taken 17 calls for slide offs, and another 17 accidents.

Just a few reported non-life-threatening injuries, dispatchers said. Among them was an accident along Blackwater Road east of C.R. 850 East, where a pickup truck driver slid into a pedestrian. The man was not seriously injured.

Roads were "extremely hazardous," dispatchers for Plymouth said.

With additional snowfall and traffic Tuesday morning, officials urged caution.

The latest update from the National Weather Service has all of Michiana under a winter storm warning that remains in effect until 4 p.m. EST.

Heavy bands of snow will drop between four and eight inches in most places, with higher amounts where the heavier bands set up.

In the southern tier Michigan counties of Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph, as well as in LaPorte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, a blowing snow advisory is also in effect. Higher winds are expected to make driving difficult, causing poor visibility and difficult road conditions.
