More burglaries reported in St. Joseph County

SOUTH BEND — Burglars who have been targeting homes in areas just west and southwest of the city could be moving on to other parts of the county, police say.

Since a recent report listed 13 residential burglaries in that general area during the past two weeks, four more have been reported — three on Friday and another on Saturday.

However, police believe two additional Monday burglaries in other areas could possibly be related.

Sgt. Bill Redman, a St. Joseph County police spokesman, said the local media’s coverage of the thefts could have led to the switch.

“We’re not ruling it out,” Redman said. “We’re looking at every possibility at this point. We’ve had many calls from people who live there, and they’re definitely concerned.”

Monday’s burglaries were in the 16000 block of New Road, southeast of South Bend, and on Lath Trail, which is near North Liberty. Other thefts have occurred in the county, but most of those are too far north to be seriously considered linked.

No burglaries were reported on Tuesday, Redman said. And no arrests have been made.

“We’re actively pursing this,” Redman said. “Some people in those areas have said they haven’t seen extra patrols out there, but we’re obviously doing stuff, I just can’t comment on everything we’re doing.”

The series of burglaries began on Feb. 12. The thieves are targeting mostly electronics, such as plasma TVs, stereos and cameras.

People with information are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP or the detective bureau at (574) 235-9569.

Secured Alarms is now offering home owners $50 off a security system to anyone that shows they have been a victum of a burglary in the past year. At least someone is trying to help these people!

this started in the southeast neighborhood and it keeps moving around every month. They won't catch them. They claim that the cases are "unsolveable" and move on to the next one. But I guess it's our own fault. How can we complain about Lueke when we had only 20,000 people vote in the mayoral election and our city is what 150,000 . This is our own fault. Just keep sitting and observing...nobody wants to participate, just place blame.

To unknown - your poor dillusional thing - the mayor has stated time and time again crime is down - yep - down under his radar - notice burglaries in his neighborhood have gone down - who cares about the rest. Hey - since crime is down lets have the mayor do a foot patrol from midnight to 6am on the west side - then see what his opinion and remarks would be.

South Bend has become a melting pot for drugs and crime, Our Mayor should do more about this and less to promote the city as being such a great place to live. Penilties for crime should be just that. PENILTIES. NO PLEA BARGINS. JAIL.. Jail time should be more like jail than a hotel offering criminals better immentities common work folks can't afford. Crime rate is getting awful in South Bend, the criminal better be very cautions, because residents are tired of this.

They're staying away from South Bend because of Mayor Luecke's tough stance on crime. LOL, or there's too much competition in South Bend.

Those thieves better be careful where they intend to hit - some "good ole boys" may put an end to their way of life - few spray of pellets in their rear end is what they may need
