MISHAWAKA — They weren’t looking to cause a big ruckus Tuesday afternoon, but they wanted to make sure their message was loud and clear.

“Thou Shalt Not Kill.”

Several members of Right to Life of St. Joseph County lined the sidewalk in front of the Planned Parenthood, 3005 Grape Road, on Tuesday — despite freezing temperatures and falling snow — to protest the clinic’s one-day free emergency contraception giveaway.

“We believe it’s a form of abortion,” said John Kominkiewicz, office coordinator at Right to Life, amid honks from drivers who passed the clinic. “And we totally disagree with that.”

According to Planned Parenthood, which announced the giveaway less than two weeks ago, emergency contraception lowers the risk of pregnancy when started within 72 hours and up to 120 hours of unprotected intercourse. Health center officials decided to sponsor the event statewide Tuesday as spring break looms for many Indiana college students who need to be reminded of the importance of responsible sexual behavior.

“They could’ve done it on a nice day,” Kominkiewicz said with a chuckle, “but they did it on a day we got a big snow.”

But the winter weather didn’t put a damper on the number of area residents who stopped by the Mishawaka office Tuesday. As of 5 p.m., the office had given away 34 doses of emergency contraception — a boost from the 25 doses it was expecting to give out, Planned Parenthood communications manager Steve Carr said.

Many clients at the center declined to speak to The Tribune on Tuesday, and Carr said the organization strove to protect the confidentiality of its patients. Valparaiso and Evansville centers also had a giveaway Tuesday, with the state’s other seven centers slated to do this in March and April. The doses are privately funded through the women’s health fund.

Although Planned Parenthood officials said emergency contraception should only be used in an emergency situation — not as a main source of birth control — Right to Life members argue that Planned Parenthood is deceiving women by telling them that the drug is only a contraceptive and not an abortifacient.

The contraceptive works like a regular birth control pill, preventing pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary and also possibly preventing the fertilization of an egg. But the drug also can work by preventing the egg from attaching to the uterus, which makes it an abortifacient, Kominkiewicz said — a claim Planned Parenthood disagrees with.

Also, not many members of the public understand the seriousness of side effects such as blood clots, high blood pressure and stroke, said Sue Brazo, a registered nurse who retired from Memorial Hospital.

Although abortion and emergency contraception are legal, Right to Life believes women deserve to be completely informed about the consequences of drugs being dispensed to them, St. Joseph County President Tom Gill wrote in a letter.

Peaceful protesters held up other signs that read “æ‘Morning after pill’ can kill a child” and “P.P. exploits teens,” making a point not to block access to the office, they said.

The contraception normally costs $32.

Kristin, I hope everything works out for you when you have children. I do hope you change your way of thinking as everyone is entitled to thier own opinion. All I am saying, is that we have to protect life. That fetus has rights too and you are not letting them decide. Shouldn't we consider that? Women will never reach equality by climbing over the bodies of their dead children. As a former fetus I oppose abortion. What about the death penalty Kristen??

Hello Kristin. Your comment "its not anything that has to do with you". I disagree. Have you ever had children Kristin? I have, and it is awesome to bring life into this world. The bottom line here is do you consider a human being to be an embryo/fetus? Watch the video on my last comment and then tell me you feel the same way. Got a question for you Kristin, are you for the death penalty?

WAKE UP PEOPLE AND REALIZE THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO PLAY GOD! You could always put your child up for adoption at the least. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJzSiAPXT

Of course men have the RIGHT to be out there, it is THEIR baby these women are killing. Maybe if women made better choices about the men they sleep with and know they want to raise a baby before making one we would not even have to deal with this. Calling the baby a mistake is TERRIBLE, that is not the mistake, the "mistake" is the SIN of choosing the action of sex over the reality that it creates a baby.....duh...sex can = baby......

I would not have an abortion. I could not do it. I also could not even attempt to make that choice for another woman. I am not pro-abort, I am PRO-CHOICE. The inflammatory language used by the RTL would bring visions of perfect tiny babies being "dug" out of their mothers wombs, when we are talking about a pill that keeps a mass of cells (NOT a baby) from implanting. All of the women and children seen at RTL rallies are just the wives and families of the MEN forcing this issue.

If you think the pro-life movement is only made up of men and people beyond childbearing years, you should look at footage of the annual March for Life in Washington DC and San Francisco. Every January 22, over 250,000 people from all walks of life gather to uphold the sanctity of human life. This includes a lot of young people. If you have not seen it, the news media tends to ignore this HUGE march. (If it were a tiny anti-war protest, it would be all over the national evening news.)

When someone can't really argue the facts or defend hacking pre-born babies to death, he/she launches personal attacks against pro-life people. The comments offered here by abortion supporters are a prime example. Let's set the record straight: Pro-lifers do a lot charity work for all groups of people. Men have just as much right to defend pre-born babies as anyone else. People who practice abstinence and monogamy are clean and free of disease. See Planned Parenthood hurts girls pphurtsgirls.org

Planned Parenthood is a useful service to the community...if only more people would realize the importance of detecting and treating stds the world would be a safer place. Just because u dont believe in all of thier services, dont slander them. They are a very helpful resource to those who need it(like people who cannot afford better healthcare). I am clean and free of disease but i would not have that confidence if they closed like some want.

You have to remember that the people from RTL only care about the unborn (from conception to birth) once they are out of the womb, they bid them good luck. That is why they don't want to even try to help people who are already here suffering from Parkinson's & other diseases with embryonic stem cell research. You're an actual person, you don't count, only that wad of cells that can't even survive outside the womb does.

I know there are good points on both sides of this issue, but the fact remains that I want to be in control of what happens to my life. Granted, preventing a pregnancy (via birth control methods) is preferred, but if an unwanted pregnancy occurs, I want the choice! And I would get out and picket to keep it!

Here we go hearing the same old rhetoric from misinformed abortion supporters. The truth is: Abortion is not just about a woman's body. It involves her baby's body too. Legal abortion has not saved us from the scourage of child abuse. In fact, the rate of child abuse has gotten worse since 1973. There is a known link between abortion and child abuse. Some born children have been abused following their mother's abortion of a sibling. Some mothers abused them to death. People wait to adopt babies

It is a women's body and she can do what she wants with it. I noticed the the mojority of the protesters are MEN. They want the fun, but to responsablity. If these people don't want birth control or abortion, then everyone of them should put a 500,000 dollares in the bank to help raise these unwanted babies. What do you think causes all the cased of child abuse. It is an unwanted child. So I say put up or shut up. It is the law of the land, and I hope it continues

There are two sides to every story, but bashing people that are trying to save the life of a baby (not fetus) I didn't refer to my child as fetus in the womb. Is IMMATURE. There wouldn't be an issue if people would be responsible before having sex. It is... other peoples business after the fact. Tell Grandparents that have to help raise grandchildren it's not their business. Or women who need financial help. Sex is not just something to feel good about. Your actions ALWAYS effect others.

I cannot believe a person would want to abort God's creation. There are a ton of loving couples who are willing to adopt. So I say, quit killing and put your child up for adoption. They need to go home and mind their own business and stop destroying others lives.
