SOUTH BEND — Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, the St. Joseph County Police Department plans to kick off a revitalized program to combat underage drinking.

County police will relaunch the SUDS (Stop Underage Drinking and Sales) Program.

Funded by a $6,000 grant from the local Drug Free Community Council, a SUDS unit will be reestablished. The SUDS program is a cooperative effort that involves local police and the prosecutor’s office working together to reduce underage drinking and sales. The original SUDS task force was created more than 11 years ago.

Under the revitalized program, local police agencies will work with middle schools and high schools, placing tip boxes at schools to provide employees and students a place to report anonymously on underage drinking and sales to minors. The tips will be collected by school resource officers. There also will be a phone number to call or text message tips.

More information will be released early next week.
