PLYMOUTH — Plymouth has a lot to celebrate these days. For the first time, the girls basketball team won the 3A basketball championship.

And Sunday, the town gathered at Plymouth High School for a pep rally. The celebration was a way to honor the team and help inspire Plymouth’s youngest fans.

Seven-year-old Makenzie Quissell couldn't wait to get an autograph from the state's number one team.

"I was excited," Makenzie said.

And Lady Pilgrim Lyzz Smith knows that feeling, too.

"Now a couple years later you're sitting in this position and you're looking back on it and you're like wow, I'm in this position now and all these little kids are looking up to me. It's a great feeling," Smith said.

A state basketball title is nothing new in Plymouth. In fact, the boys won it in 1982 and again last year.

“But this year a class 3A state girls title."

It’s something many people say was long overdue.

"Oh it's awesome. Everybody's rallied behind and we're excited. We wanted them to bring it home and they did," said Lady Pilgrims fan Julie Crum.

"It really is to have the girls finally win a state championship. The boys have been doing it for quite a while and now the girls have stepped up and I think it's great," said Lady Pilgrims fan Deanne Quissell.

But this team didn't just bring home a shiny new plaque to a proud community. They brought home a new dream, many young girls like Makenzie hope to one day fulfill.

How exciting would that be?

"Really exciting," said Makenzie.

A number of community members attended Sunday's celebration, including Indiana Congressman Joe Donnelly.
