NILES — Local bus drivers concerned about their jobs and the safety of the children they take to school protested in Niles Sunday.

Protesters lined the streets at four different locations. The district's 28 bus drivers helped organize the event.

Margo Rivera has been driving for seven years and says losing her job isn't her only concern.

"The safety of the children is most important though,” said bus driver Margo Rivera. “With privatization you hear a lot of horror stories about the things that go on with the private companies busing your children. And I have children in the district and it really scares me."

Niles Superintendent Doug Law earlier told WSBT News "the district is looking at bids for privatizing." He says it's also in very intense negotiations with the current union.

The question of whether or not to privatize bus transportation next school year will likely be decided by Niles Community Schools officials at the school board meeting Monday.

Would think that you the citizen, as parents would be concerned more on the education of your children. Bus drivers are part-time seasonal drivers? Receiving full time benefits? No cost to them for health insurance, because you the tax payer pays it? You pay for the their retirement also? What is wrong with this picture for a seasonal part time job? 12 Sick days, 10 days vacation? Yes Michigan! You need to Wake UP! The EDUCATION of your CHILDREN should be your biggest concern!

Are they going to hire Laidlaw, like other school systems in Michigan? I ask because i know that other school systems in the area use Laidlaw to transport the students.

I as a student as personally mad at the school system for considering doing what their doing to the bus drivers. They will lose retirement and health benefits! How can they take that away? Where are they going to get health insurance for their families? Just so that the school can save a couple dollars to spend on the sports program instead of children's education!

Do the taxpayers really win when more peolpe are put out of work. Think of the cost of un-employment, food stamps, utility help, housing allowances. The less people working the more taxpayers pay. Is it not better to have them working? Everybodys share goes up when we support people who can not find work. Maybe the answer is to look at the whole pie and see where there may be some waste and savings. This year bus drivers next year teachers?

I feel sorry for the drivers who have provided safe service for the students. As usual the folks at the bottom take the hit. I do not know what a Niles driver makes but they earn every penny of it. It is too bad that the high price of fuel and health insurance helps drive this need for cheaper help. I blame this on the oil companies they have driven the inflation with thier GREED! When it is time to vote do not forget who has allowed this greed to happen and make others suffer! Best Wishes

So nobody wants to privatize, then tell me and tell the schools where they are going to come up with the money to pay the drivers what they want. If the school can go private, free up assets that are currently managing and operating the buses and save money, then the school benefits, if the school benefits, then the taxpayers and the students benefit, it is that simple, if they were not looking at privatization, they would be seriously derelict in their duty to the taxpayers.
