ELKHART — After months on the backburner, the Elkhart City Council is turning up the heat on a smoking ban for the city. It's similar to what other cities have done.

The ordinance would ban smoking in any enclosed public place, like workplaces, restaurants and some businesses.

The only exceptions would be outdoor work areas, clubs, hotel smoking areas, and tobacco shops.

At least one local restaurant has already banned smoking in anticipation of the city's plan.

"We want everyone to eat in a healthy environment,” said Cathy Kelley.

Kelley owns the Boardwalk Cafe, and this week, she decided it was time to go smoke free.

“I just felt now was the time for a change,” she said. “I have a lot of smokers, but I also have a lot of non-smoking customers. They had asked me to go smoke-free and I mainly did it for the children that come in."

Overall the decision to go smoke-free has received positive reaction from regulars including some who smoke.

"It was pretty smoky in here and I'd go home and my clothes would smell like smoke,” said nonsmoker Barb Ross. “So now, I'm looking forward to coming here and eating and going home and not smelling like a cigarette."

“People have the right, their right to do their own thing,” said smoker Tom Mason. “But if it's offensive to a lot of other people, like people with health issues, I have no problem with it. I can respect another person's right."

“Well I believe people should have the right to smoke, but also don't feel that they should infringe upon my rights, I’ve never smoked,” said Ben Daugherty. “As far as I'm concerned they should have place, and if there is a place, I don't go there."

"I don't see I lost any business,” said Kelley. “As a matter of fact I've picked up some customers."

The city of Goshen started its smoking ban last fall. It;s similar to the proposal in Elkhart.

How many smokers claim they are going GREEN? It gets to the point where everything is ridiculous. If they want to smoke let them smoke in a designated area. Maybe smoking should be banned from all county and city vehicles. Wise up. We are more like countries in years gone past. This is the land of the FREE?

I am handicapped, and in a wheelchair, and I smoke. My whole social life is going to restaurants and meeting with friends and family. Am I to be a shut-in now? What about the older population of Elkhart who have smoked all their lives and they use restaurants to meet with friends? This town should not have the right to force any person or business into doing something they do not want to do. I do not want to choose between smoking or a social life. I liked my life the way it is. Now I loose more

I would love the new smoking ban to take effect in Elkhart, we could then enjoy the restaurants, I'm tired of walking thru the smoking area to get to the non smoking area to eat my meal. My next wish would be for Michigan to start the non smoking ban then we could also enjoy our neighbor state.

smoking is only bad because some one said it was bad. drinking is bad for you, causes all kinds of health problesm too, but does any one care! NO..they keep on pushing drinking on television and magazines. Just be responcible when drinking, but don't smoke, it's bad for you! smoking a cig. going down the road never wiped out whole families! but because one person makes a decision for the entire country, smokers are treated like lepers! all that amounts to is control! Ban Drinking will save lives

I'm a non smoker but I totally agree with Diane. The Safety Nazis and the Government need to resolve more important issues like price gouging oil companies and inflation that is bringing our economy to a stand still, Illegals that cost us billions and health care costs just to name a few. We don't need to waste time and money for prohibition on tobacco. Get a life people!!!

Simple solution. A smoking sign..This ia a non-smoking environment. This is a smoking environment

As to the annoyance of smoking, a compromise between smokers and non-smokers can be reached, through setting a quality standard and the use of modern ventilation technology. Air ventilation can easily create a comfortable environment that removes not just passive smoke, but also and especially the potentially serious contaminants that are independent from smoking. Aren't there more important things in the world the government should worry about? For God's sake, for years there were smoking and non-smoking areas in public places and it worked just fine. The government needs to quit trying to control everyone's life.

If smokers want to continue to damage their own health they can continue to do so. But they should only be doing so outdoors where it doesn't have a negative affect on my health and the health of all non-smokers. It's unfortunate that the Indiana legislature did not "have time" to pass a ban this year. That means that cities and towns in the state that don't already have bans each ought to consider passing one soon.

Ok I don't smoke. But, if tobacco is such a bad thing, and I think it is. How about government bodies STOP taking profits from its sale. Like you would ever see that.
