ST. JOSEPH CO. — The Hummer H2 plant in St. Joseph County will shut down production sometime Tuesday, meaning 400 local workers will be temporarily off the job.

A spokesman for AM General told WSBT News the shutdown is a result of the strike against American Axle. The company provides parts for the H2 and other GM vehicles.

Employees leaving the plant Monday afternoon were preparing themselves for the long haul.

"We might be laid off a long time," said Victor Miramontes, who works at the plant. "Some people [are] talking until September."

GM buys some parts for the H2 from American Axle. GM then sends those parts to the H2 plant.

But last week American Axle workers walked off the job in a dispute over wages.

Eight hundred of them work in Three Rivers, Mich. GM has shut down factories across the Midwest, because they've run out of axles.

Now, the H2 plant is suffering the same fate. Even those employees who will still work during the shutdown will have to adjust.

"We all get affected by it," said Clarence Bibbs, a non-union employee. "We're going to lose production, and we'll just find other things to do."

Bibbs blames the American Axle workers for the shutdown.

"There's an alternative solution, rather than going on strike," Bibbs said. "Nobody wins when you go on strike."

UAW workers at the plants that have been shut down have been supportive of their fellow union members.

Even though some of them, like Victor Miramontes, are now caught in the middle of the dispute.

AM General officials said the company's employees will be eligible for unemployment benefits and other benefits provided by the company. A spokesman said even if the strike ends soon, production may not resume for a couple days.

I work @ american axle, and I am here to tell you, don't believe everything you read in the media! Whoever said we make $60-70 an hour has some really bad info.

In todays economy $23/hour is not much. The cost of living just keeps going up. Yes take the pay cut, but offer buyouts for those that don't want to work for those wages.

Union Man---do you want cheaper goods? Take a pay cut. Pay for the bulk of your own health care for a change. How about trying to figure out where the next meal is going to come from. Be blessed that you make $60 or $70 an hour. The reality is, is that there are thousands of people that will gladly take your job with half the money and half the benefts. Viva la resistance!

Sorry to see so many people out of work. Does it really matter whose fault it is? I can understand anyone needing better money. Some have to work part time and full time to survive. Look at the gas prices at the pump and in your home heating. How many people can really afford a new car? Look at all the job losses throughout the country. These business's have moved to other countrys. Whose fault is that? The government maybe. I think you are crucifying the wrong people here. Just an opinion!

All of you are a big bunch of hypacrites. You know darn well that if you worked in a Union and got paid what these hard working factory people do, that you wouldn't be complaining. Just 'cause someone makes more money than you with only a high school diploma doesn't mean that they don't deserve it. If your not happy with your pay then get off your hind end and do something about it with your big important college degree. Cost of living is high and not many people can afford to be out of work.

Quit complaining...just sit back and collect your unemployment checks. This would be a good time to get a few things done around the house :) It is really just a matter of time until they close this plant anyway-I have my sources.

I know a few people that work at this company. They brag about watching videos while at 'work' & being paid big money for this. What's wrong with this picture? Lazy people with the 'they owe me" attitude. Unions mean nothing but trouble, & protection for the lazy ones. It's just like the ACLU- it started out as a good idea, now it's lost the respect of the majority of hard working people.

My husband works for H1 and he works his bottom off every night. Hard work should be compensated with good benefits and pay. I went to college and have a degree in a medical profession and didn't have insurance like his company carries or the pay they get. Just because someone works in a factory doesn't mean they don't have an education. He was a plumber/pipefitter before starting at H1 and there are a lot of employees there that have college degrees too.

is this the time to thank your fellow union buddies for going on strike and showing your complete support after all they would be doing the same if it were you putting them out of work...the union is great....

When the strike is settled, GM and the H2 plant will go back to production. I hope it is soon, but it may not be. These things happen in the auto industry. Plastech shutdown Chrysler recently, and other suppliers have had problems that have shutdown plants. I wonder if the Fort Wayne Truck plant is down because of the strike at American Axle? GM makes fullsize(silverado/sierra) trucks there.

I think you mean they made 37 million dollar profit for the year. For a big company that isn't that much.

Tuesday, Mar 4 at 2:03 PM ? wrote ...

They were making $23/hour?!?!?! Are you kidding me!? Most people who I know that have a college degree do not make that much and most of the GM assembly workes may only have a high school diploma! Give me a break...they should only be making around $14 to $15 per hour. No wonder vehicle prices are so high. Maybe I should have not paid all that money and devoted all that time for college and just be a GM line worker.

This is why GM products are falling behind. You get great benefits, great pay and in some cases a bonus. GM isn't what it once was and soon there won't be. Get rid of bonuses for everyone and make a decent wage. Factory workers making 50-75k a year is ridiculous. Take the cut and save your job or get an education and become management. You knew this was going to happen sooner or later. It always does. The low man always loses. The union is a joke these days. Look at Conn Selmer.

Its about time these people at h2 get a break... from big fat pay checks, ecxclent benefits and cushy jobs. They dont know how good they got it and its worse at H1.Lots of lazy people. This cost money but they keep them employeed how? The Union fights for the weak and doesn't do anything for the strong. The committe is week and has poor reps.

we continually give back at axle and continually get nothing back in return. dont belive aams numbers they put in the paper they are way over inflated. we give back for more jobs and job security, and never get what they promise. what we do get back is threats about closing our plants. If they would have kept there promises back in 2001 when we were the first company to bring in 2tier system wages,we would be more apt to work with them. now we just want everything in writing and for our future.

once again, striking worksers affect other areas. speaking of strikes: were are the cameras and the hollywood elite who champion for the guy who sits on his tail, writing mediocre drivel?? How come they're not out there, championing for the striking UAW. Better yet, where is Michael Moore. He loves this this. Better heard than not seen, I guess.

At least they are trying to stand up for what they believe is fair. Companies want to pay workers less while the cost of living keeps going up. By the way they are asking them to go from $23/hour to $14/hour, lose there pension, and pay higher insurance premiums. When the company has been profitable every year since being spun off of GM.

It would seem to me, that South Bend should appreciate what is going on in Three Rivers, remember Studebaker, South Bend Lathe, AM General, Dodge Manufacturing, Reliance, Drewrys, Allis Chalmers, Kawneer, Clark Equipment, Tyler Refrigeration and others driven either out of town, or out of business by union excesses, their costs of doing business simply rose to the point that they could no longer compete in the marketplace. Not big government, nor big business, greedy labor.

Monday, Mar 3 at 8:56 PM Susan wrote ...

In reading one of the related articles I was looking for what they were striking for. It says they are being paid $60--$70 per HOUR in wages & benefits..... I have to agree they are overpaid and need to realize that the marketplace cannot afford these wages or them. The gravy train needs to end. It is not everyone else's fault they have to come to reality but they are making it so by shutting down other places. They need to be reined back into reality of what they are actually worth.

Monday, Mar 3 at 8:39 PM John Wesley wrote ...

Ron Paul wont help, it is not big business,or big government that have done this,it is organized labor, Gm needs to find another supplier for axles, dump the one who's employees them down and go on, If you don't like what you are being paid on a job, move on, do not destroy the company that you work for by going on strike. That company will never come back from this strike,in fact it eventually will probably go out of business, or send its products overseas where they can get cheaper labor.

Monday, Mar 3 at 8:38 PM anonymous wrote ...

we better watch out cause they will start putting rebuilt axle's in new trucks when thats all GM can get and they raise the price on them too along with moving all the jobs to a third world country.

One day - Our Work Force(s) will take the concept of the Toyota Work Ethics (Non-Union but as a cell union organization within the plant).. Lead - Follow - or GET Out of The Way..
