SOUTH BEND (AP) — A $12 million expansion will add five new gates, a lounge and other amenities to South Bend Regional Airport.

Work is expected to begin in spring 2009 and be completed in late 2010, airport Director John Schalliol said Monday.

The remodeling will consolidate passenger screening operations at a single site. The improvements will include a dining room, lounge, gift shop and a children's room with airport-themed toys.

While the improvements are not expected to attract more airlines to the airport, they should make flying a more pleasant experience, Schalliol said.

The expansion will be paid for out of the Airport Improvement Fund, which draws money from airline tickets. The airport receives about $2.7 million a year from the fund, so four or five years will be required to pay for the improvements, Schalliol said.

Work will be done in phases to avoid interrupting flights.
