THREE RIVERS — Work at the H2 plant in Mishawaka shut down Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the plant says they ran out of parts around 9:30 a.m. because of a strike at American Axle and Manufacturing.

Almost 400 H2 workers are now out of a job.

This is the second week of the strike at American Axle. It includes union workers at their Three Rivers plant.

"I think we need to be out here. I think more people need to be out here," said American Axle union worker Hillary Garlow.

Union worker Jeff Gentry added, "We've had pretty good support out here so far."

The workers are upset over wages and benefit cuts.

"[You] try to take care of your family the best you can, and we're doing this for our families," said union worker Sheri Galli.

They're now loading up for the long haul.

"We've been out here 2 weeks now and we'll be out here another possibly 2 to 3 weeks. I don't know, but we'll be out here as long as it takes," said Gentry.

GM buys axles and other parts from American Axle to supply the H2 plant in Mishawaka.

"We might be laid off a long time," commented H2 worker Victor Miramontes.

That's because no parts mean no production.

"I feel sorry for the people there, but I'm sure they understand," said Gentry.

"I think it's good," Garlow added. "I think it needs to be felt. The sooner these places like GM and everything like that start saying, 'Hey, we need some parts,' hopefully the sooner that will get them back into talks."

The H2 plant is one of six GM assembly plants to shut down because of the strike.

There are no scheduled talks between the UAW and American Axle.

Those laid off from the H2 plant are eligible for unemployment benefits as well supplemental benefits through AM General.

I am a wife of a laid off worker because of the strike! I would first like to say that we are very pro union! Some of the comments say that they are being too greedy for wanting to keep their pay of $23/per hr. Why should they give up what they have worked so hard for?! The prices of everything is NOT going to go down! Hate to inform you of this SHOCKING news! So lets all join the POOR house! Think NOT! The prices of cars from China are far from being CHEAP! Huh? Guess you are not thinking!

American Axle---send me an app. I'll work for half of what these union clowns are making. The unions have made themselves "big." The Republicans had nothing to do this. The unions kept wanting more and more and now, they've become so fat that they're workers are suffering. And the reality is, the strike affects the "people" not the "corporation." You'll never get back what you lost. You reap what you sow, union whackjobers

They always use the word, "adversarial". It's tricky because no one wants to be adversarial. But think, it's not, "adversarial", it's, "contractual". Shall we abolish all contracts because the relationship is "adversarial"? Unions are weaker because folks with low IQs regard the boss the same way puppies regard their beloved owners. They want to believe in their "buddy" relationship...

The union hasn't been strong since the 60's. Thank the republicans, you definately aren't educated. It is the union big wigs, not a party to blame. They are in the business worlds back pocket. Do your own research and quit listening to ignorant people in your work place.

Unions are losing ground because of coments like these. We need to stick together, support and help when big companies want to cut pay, jobs and benafits. I fully support the strike and will like to get Local 5 together and go up there and walk with them.

American Axle is wanting to cut these individuals pay in half as well as benefits. I would be strike too. How can they expect people to lose that much money and still want to work there?

Go on strike? are you people crazy? in this day and age with the economy the way it is it seams like the last thing to do is strike. I'll bet if American Axle had a job fair that it would be full with people happy to go to work and make the wages being haggled over. The upper management at the union still has their jobs. Are they on the phone trying to work things out???? or are they out in the cold holding picket signs?

It appears that early on, unions were created to benefit the working in an effort to bring them a better working environment along with a reasonable pay for the work performed. Now, unions are in an adversarial relationship with companies and appear to exist as profit centers for the union management. There needs to be a paradigm shift with the realization that unions have been the downfall of the Detroit marketplace and will continue to move jobs overseas. Is it any surprise that we outsour
