GOSHEN — More bad economic news when it comes to jobs, this time in Goshen. Gleason Industrial Products says it will likely close in a couple months, leaving 165 workers out of a job.

Gleason is blaming the U.S. government and a Chinese company.

Gleason Industrial Products has been in business for 60 years, becoming the nation's largest supplier of hand trucks. But now, the U.S. Commerce Department is going to lower the tariffs for a Chinese company that's making a similar product.

"This is the Chinese product, which is in direct competition with out product,” explained Bill Malone, Jr. “Their people make an average of $25 a week, and when this product floods our market, we're going to be out of business selling our product."

Gleason officials say the lower tariffs will make the Chinese product cheaper, giving them the edge over Gleason.

Longtime employees say they are more than just a little bit peeved that the state of trade relations between China and the U.S. has led to the possible loss of jobs in Goshen.

"When China can send a hand truck half way around the world and we can't send it to Ohio and be competitive, something is terribly, terribly wrong,” said employee Mike Plasterer.

“And now they are after my job,” said employee Doug Davis. “It just doesn't seem fair to me that the American government doesn't give us a little bit more protection than that."

“It sickens me, it’s beyond belief,” Plasterer said.

The actions of the Chinese company are also expected to affect another plant in Illinois, resulting in the loss of 240 jobs.

Jason, have you ever made a hand truck? Do you even know how to start? There are people at Gleason with college degrees.

Yeah, newsflash, these days a college degree doesn't guarantee you the keys to the kingdom or a job that deosn't stink. Unless of course your mommy & daddy have connections, then you're on easy street even if you're a total dimwitted slacker, like our president.

Jason, You'd be surprised at how many college grads are working manufacturing jobs. A diploma only guarentees more debt, not a better job. We all need to pray that our government wakes up and starts protecting OUR interests.

China exports lolly pops with metal shavings, metal castings that fail over time...Mexico exports pharmaceutals containing paint shavings....These countries are harming our own people because of no Big Brother watching to make sure safety standards are met. Yet, the US continues to allow these countries to supply the US these tainted goods. When will the US realize that the US produces far superior products at somewhat higher prices, but will last much longer and be safe for human consumption?

I work with industry all over North America. Manufacturing plants that have re-invested by up-dating with automation and lean manufacturing are doing well. Companies that rely on cheep American labor are loosing work to China, India etc. Even Mexico is loosing jobs to China and India if they rely solely on cheep labor. We asked for a Global economy by demanding lower cost stuff, now its time to put our American ingenuity to work!

Whats wrong with this picture? Our goverment again selling out americans. Whats is the solution? Change our politicions every election and most of all do not support Chinese made products( don't buy them) lot's of American made products just read the labels. This is what the Bush and Clinton has done for your country remember that when you vote in the preliminataries for your canditate. Go Ron Paul!!

I think we are just beginning to see the effects of years of supporting other countries' economies. It's unfortunate that the American economy isn't one that's growing. We can change our future by buying American and investing in American companies. Think about it! If companies continue to close here in the states because of foreign competition, where will our children work?

Thats right blue collar folks who decided to put bread on there table instead of living off mommy and daddy. I work in a factory that is threatened by china every day, and you know what we have college kids in here that can't do what is required, SO LAY OFF!!!!!!!

It was interesting that just after this story aired, the following story was about a brand new Wal-Mart opening up. It seems our society as a whole is more interested in how much stuff we can accumulate at cheap prices. If consumers base their buying decisions on cheap prices, more jobs will be outsourced to countries that don't enforce labor or safety laws.

Trebor and Jason have shown a complete lack of knowledge of economics or labor. Sure, what you say sounds witty, it shows you don't get it.

The people that are losing a job are the same who shop at Wal-Mart buying Chinese junk and forcing other plants around the country to close their doors. I wonder how many of those same workers drive a foreign car? Karma.

This is very sad. I feel sorry for the Goshen workers. It won't be long and there won't be any good paying jobs here. Who's going to buy the Chinese stuff then? Polititians don't care.

just keep on buying your stuff from over seas but don't you cry to me when you're in the same soup line, i'm in college boy, because pretty soon the chinese will have your job too. it's time we start caring about america instead of every one else!!!!!!!

jason it sounds like you are someone that is helping or would sellout your own country to make a buck, and might sell your own family too.just like your man mitch selling out indiana one business at a time

Wednesday, Mar 5 at 6:44 PM Jason wrote ...

I buy things made in China, because most things made there are inexpensive. If you want a good job that won't get outsourced, finish high school and go to college. Anyone can make a hand truck.

Wednesday, Mar 5 at 6:19 PM Jim wrote ...

Maybe we should move to China, might not make as much, but at least we would have a job, health care and a place to live

Wednesday, Mar 5 at 5:12 PM Trebor wrote ...

Only the American people can stop China from destroying our manufacturers, our government getting kickbacks from China. STOP buying stuff made in china,
