SOUTH BEND — A new law signed by Gov. Mitch Daniels will require businesses with more than 25 workers to provide a privacy room for lactating mothers. The law goes into effect in July.

Barnes & Thornburg LLP in South Bend has recently upgraded a conference room to a lactation room for its female employees.

The room is set up with comfortable chairs, a small refrigerator, and hospital quality pumps, all the things new moms need.

"I think its great. Just the support the firm has and the encouragement to do what I believe is healthiest for my child," said Keri Langdom-Martin. She is expecting her second child and is excited to have the new lactation room available when she returns to work in July.

"As a mother of three children having a place that is designated, having an electrical outlet with a hospital grade breast pump so this can be done efficiently and privately and with respect and dignity does make a difference. It makes it a much more comfortable working environment," said Barnes & Thornburg LLP partner Jeanine Gozdezki.

She says the room has been in the works for a number of years. The firm plans to expand on the room in the future, making it a wellness room for all employees who need a private place for medical needs.

Bravo, more companies should follow this example. It is good for mothers, babies, families, business and communities. If we assume that breastmilk is good for babies, which we do, and mothers must be seperated from their babies, than this is the logiccal conclusion. The return on investment in employee loyalty, reduced sick time and lower company health costs is for every dollar spend 3 dollars are gained. Cultural education that this is good everyone is all that is needed here.

Wow-did this go off on a negative tangent. To clarify, my employer doesn't pay for me to pump each day-I add on 1/2 hour to my workday. I can't stay home-wish that I could. However, by feeding breastmilk, I've got healthier kids, which equals less time out, which leads to higher productivity. Working moms are an economic reality-whether Bill & Co. like it or not. Paying for a fridge and a pump-grand total: $700. This isn't waste-its an investment in keeping an employee.

shocked... it isnt being mean spirited towards others... others should not be ordered to pay out of their pockets so that someone can be a breastfeeding mother and/or a stay at home mother... for a mother to stay home and raise her children and nurse them is fantastic, healthier and right, but the business should not be made to pay for her to do so and the taxpayers should not have to foot the $ for the govt to waste their time & $ coming up with such!!!!! CUT THE WASTE!!!!!

I am shocked that people (Bill & A) can be so mean-spirited and cold-hearted. Have some compassion for people who can't live on one income. You may not agree with having a working mother but for goodness sake - don't condemn or belittle those who have to work. Show some compassion, understanding and love for other humans.

How do you expect these companies to function while a mother takes 12 months PAID maternity?

if women want 2 b mothers n stay at home they should do so NOT expect nor have govt make it happen that a business has 2 PAY her 2 stay home w/ her children! it is already pathetic that the govt wasted taxpayers$ 2 come up w/ this story!n i am a mother of 5 that nursed as well! it should NOT be expected that the employer has 2 foot the bills 4 u 2 b a mommy staying home or able 2 pump while u work! yes i agree its best 4 the baby but even better is staying home nU raising ur own child not sittr!

This is the dumbest thing I have ever read. These United States keep getting lower and lower. Let these so called mothers either quit their jobs or wait to have kids till they can be full time mothers.

Why not go one better and give working mothers a decent maternity leave - in Europe, mothers can take up to 12 months paid maternity leave (in some places 18 months) and then return to their job. A lot more family friendly!!

That is great mothers can make their own milk at work. Mothers milk is good for the babies.
