GOSHEN — Goshen College tested a new warning system Friday, aimed at keeping students safe in an emergency. They're looking to install sirens and speakers around the campus. It could be used for anything from tornadoes to potential violence.

Friday, it was just a test. But at some point in the future, a new campus warning system could save lives.

"We are looking at the possibility of a large siren, a public address system that might actually, hopefully, be able to get at least the first level of warning out to the campus as quickly as possible,” explained Utilities Manager Glenn Gilbert.

“Goshen College is really committed to the safety of all of our students, as well as improving how we communicate with the whole campus,” said Jodi Beyeler, Goshen College’s news bureau director. “And so this is one more step toward that."

Students say they are aware of recent incidents on other universities across the country and say they appreciate what the college is doing to enhance campus safety.

"It would cross my mind, especially when I' m listening to the news and hearing other things like that happening,” said student Veloris Hess. “I understand the need for a siren and definitely agree that it’s good that it’s being put up and I would support it."

"I'm glad that the college is looking into trying to improve the safety around campus both for violence issues, and also for issues like tornadoes or storm warnings,” said student Andy Brubaker.

"To know that the campus community is building in more different ways to enhance our community and keep us safe, just makes me feel even better about it,” said student Tim Blaum.

Like many universities across the country, Goshen College also emails emergency information to students and staff.
