Petitioners for a $20 million building project in the Union-North United School Corporation are working around the clock to drum up support.

They've been circulating their petitions since late February.

Whichever side gets the most signatures will determine whether the plans move forward.

Both sides tried to convince people during community meetings Saturday, but that didn't come without some controversy.

Both sides agree renovations are necessary especially when it comes to the elementary school. But the disagreement comes when they talk money and exactly how much it will cost taxpayers.

"I see the need every single day," said supporter Julie Schmidt.

Schmidt says that need is space. She says her daughter knows first hand how crowded it is at LaVille Elementary School.

"When the year started she had 26 students in her class. That's just too many second graders to have in one classroom," said Schmidt.

Overcrowding issues have forced sixth graders to be housed in four portable classrooms behind the school. It's one of the many reasons people like Schmidt are petitioning to build a new middle school and renovate the elementary school and high school.

Supporters say the proposed project would cost $19.6 million. With interest, they say it would cost the average taxpayer an extra $10 a month.

"It's a worse case scenario figure," said supporter Tim Tyler.

But some taxpayers say that's just not affordable.

"The people who say it's only going to cost me $10, I say to them if it's only $10 please pay mine," said Michael Gross.

Gross is among those who won't be saying yes to the plan. Those against the plan say if you look at the entire life of the project, it would cost much more than the projected $19.6 million.

“You're misleading the public when they think it's only $19.6 million. The truer cost of this is closer to $40 million," said George Moffett.

Petitioners have until March 24 to gather signatures. The side with the most signatures wins. If the proposed project passes, it must still be approved by the state.

With the current numbers at Laville where is the projected increase to warrant a new building. Yes we need more class rooms at the elementary but buiding on to the existing building is far more cost effective than building a new middle school especially when enrollment is declining. We don't have to keep up with the Jone's. Utilize the space that is in the high school for the special needs children. It is my understanding that there are rooms in the high school not being utilized. WAKE UP!!!!

I am for change ,but not this plan that is forced upon us and we are told "this is it" We do have problems, but most of our problems stem from the inabbility of our communities to come up with options instead of lame scare tactics which my 7 year old daughter recongnizes. Quit telling me our school is under code and my children are gonna be sent elsewhere and dont try to get me to believe that you can build this new school and not have to hire any teachers or custodians which is not figured in...

The Pro Build members must be running scared if a high level school board member must corner patron at his place of employment and then to get the patron to sign for the project, he tells them that if we do not do this, the state will close our school, send the Union Twp students to Riley and the North students to Plymouth. So now we are resorting to scare tactics. PLEASE!!!!

I commend the school board for looking ahead beyond the end of their noses. Previous boards did that when they built the high school in 1965, and when they built the elementary in 1982. The south side of So. Bend is revitalized, the population will push south. Homes are going up all around both union and north twps. You build school facilities for 20 years not just one or two.

If you don't like the tax rate in the Union North district, you are always free to see what you might pay elsewhere. I bet you discover your land and home would be subject to higher taxes in other school districts. The grass is always greener somewhere else; except on the land at the elementary school where the portables have been used for 9 years. It is time for us to do a better job and I haven't heard the opposition offer any plan except to wait. Vote yes for education. Our kids deserve it!

As a farmer and land owner, I wish that the increase to our taxes was only $10 a month. Our increase in taxes will be OVER $1000 a year. Yes, the elementary is out of room, but there are JUST as many problems at the high school. Look a little closer to the plan. There is NO plan in place to add any more teachers. I heard this first hand from a school board member! A new building is only PART of the solution.

if you are going to refuse to post anything, how about the personal comments by Lakeville parent! they are watching too much Jerry Springer..as far as "kickbacks".....this shows total ignorance.LaVille is out of room! For the future of the community we need to insure the future of our schools.

Isn't it interesting that no one except the "pro build" group can calculate that suggested $10 a month increase? Everyone else that figures their property comes up with more. Also, keep in mind all these figures are just an estimate. And they say the opposition is lying and mistating facts???? Which one of the pro build scammers is getting a kickback on this deal anyway?

Monday, Mar 10 at 12:14 PM Tony V. wrote ...

I've done the math, I'm not sure who is going to pay this average $10/month but I know it won't be me. My "small fair share" adds up to almost $40 per month. I believe that the needs are legitimate but I also believe that there are cheaper ways to accomplish this. If $13 million can be spent without affecting property tax rates then find a way to get it done. If it was known 4 years ago that this needed to be done then why wasn't a building fund started and reserved for this, then?

I find it very interesting that the PRO-build link is given here on WSBT? If you click on that link and visit it...keep in mind it was concocted by the people who want to build and it contains exaggeration and hype designed to make people think this is an urgent need. This is a salesmans tactic to convince us that we need it and we need it now... When in reality it makes a lot more sense to be patient and do it RIGHT!

Lakeville Parent..you're sure that no one associated with LV would take that kind of risk? How many administrators have had affairs with other employees in the past 5-7 years all married? How bout the HS business teacher who's been abusive for years? How bout the two that tell kids to drop out because they're worthless? How bout the current Bus Math teacher whose teaching method is "for the kids to teach themselves" & he'll help if he HAS to? You need to wake up. There's no morals at LV.

Sunday, Mar 9 at 8:51 PM Indiana wrote ...

Valerie: What are you going to do with them wheelchair students INSIDE the HS building? Even if they can crawl down the steps they won't be allowed to because oh yeah..there's asbestos down there. They'll have to sit in the halls like the kids who can walk.

Sunday, Mar 9 at 7:46 PM Anonymous wrote ...

well the kids in wheelchairs will do the same thing as the ones that are not ! they will go in the hall as thay cant go in the tunnel as its NOT safe and has steps to get down there ! the best thing thay can to is weed the garden and clean house and make the old teachers that dont teach retire !

When did we start discussing preschools? Did you ever think you could hire a teacher's assistant if the teacher can't do it all. It would be more cost effective than $19 million. Other school corporations handle the ratio fine. Yes, kids all learn on different levels but we as parents have a responsibility to help our children if they need it. You also have the option to hire tutors or go to private schools where your child would be in a class with >25. QUIT PASSING THE BUCK ON TAXPAYERS!!

Sunday, Mar 9 at 4:30 PM Valerie wrote ...

Dear anonymous, did ya ever think about what them there kids in wheelchairs would do if there was a tornado??? Didn't think of that now did ya??? And are you able to prove that the "super" will indeed get a 3% kickback? And yes, less are going to be coming to LaVille if we don't have the proper space for them.

Sunday, Mar 9 at 4:21 PM Anonymous wrote ...

The pupil ratio to teacher is a big deal. Would you send your kid to a daycare that has 30 kids to one caretaker. All kids do not learn at the same pace. Some require more one on one than others and thats not going to happen if a teacher has 25-30 kids in a class. That ratio would be difficult for any well qualified teacher. The community is expanding as should the school.

Sunday, Mar 9 at 3:03 PM Concerned Parent wrote ...

Bricks & Mortar don't educate our children. Union-North Schools pay above the average for their teaching staff and still cannot do the job. It has nothing to do with pupil ratio to teacher it has to do with qualified teachers. Close open tuition to outside people and you would have the available space needed. As far as those stating taxes only being raised $10.00 a month, that wouldn't even put enough gas in the busses to get your kids to school. NEW BLDGS. DON'T FIX PROBLEMS!

Sunday, Mar 9 at 2:32 PM Lakeville Parent wrote ...

The people who continue to repeat this "kickback" rumor are just desperate to spread dirt. An individual who received money for a project of this type would be prosecuted because it would be illegal and with all eyes focused on this plan, do you really think anyone associated with the school would take that kind of risk? But I salute the right to free speech because this website posted your comments even though there were many obvious grammatical errors. Vote yes for our chidren!

You can also notice that the information provided at the meeting on Saturday showed kindergarten 06-07 enrollment at 122.Indiana Projection for this current year (07-08) was only 89 students. What? Anyone out there know the current Kindergarten enrollment numbers?I love how the opposition provided information that only proved how much we do really need this new school. The town meeting was a joke, Dave only let people talk that had the same views as himself. Shame on him and others like him.

DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK ! THE SUPER ONLY WANTS IT AS HE GETS A 3% KICKBACK ! HE HAS NO PLAN AFTER THE ''NEW'' BULDINGS ARE BUILT ! THE OUTSIDE CLASS ROOMS ARE THE SAFEST FOR THE KIDS THAT ARE OUT THERER ! THEM KIDS DONT NEED TO BE UPSTARS IN WHEELCHAIRS IF THERES A FIRE ! DIDNT THINK OF THAT DID YA ???

What does the states website show about the 6 portable classrooms being used to teach our children? What does it say about the enrollment of the elementary the past 5 years? Does it say we added 2 more K teachers since we now have all day Kindergarten? Does it say we added a first grade teacher this year because of the numbers? What does it say about feeding our K-1 students lunch at 10:30? If you can find that info. for me on the states website, I would like to see it. It's for the KIDS!

Its time that this community belly up and give our children adequate facilities to learn. We have so much to offer, but yet there are a few that want to run things by their purse strings. Figure out, that if an individual probably spends more on cable tv for 3 months than this project would cost them for the entire year. At what value do you place the safety and education quality for our children? Anything good takes effort and yes money. take control now before mitch daniels does it for you
