MISHAWAKA — From college students to families, many people are putting the brakes on this year's spring break travel.

They say they’re either canceling or changing their vacation plans. Some aren't even planning one at all because money is so tight.

People say the pain at the pump is what's eating up their wallets.

IU South Bend sophomore Alicia Cox is spending her spring break working at Pinnacle Athletic Club. But she'd rather be somewhere else.

"I wish I was in somewhere warm ... Florida," said Cox.

For many college students like Cox, vacation is taking a back seat this year.

"I just can't afford it — broke college student," she said.

Her reason is rising gas prices.

According to AAA, gas prices in Indiana have jumped close to 75 cents in the past year. Last year, drivers paid an average of $2.50 a gallon. This year they're paying an average of $3.23.

"It's outrageous, ridiculous. It really is," said driver Jackie Headlee.

"Oh, they're horrible. They're way too high," said driver Brian Leeper.

Which is why many drivers including Leeper are forced to change their vacation plans this year.

"We used to drive out to Utah and back. Now we're just going to Shipshewana and back," said Leeper.

"We're considering taking a train to where we want to go instead of driving because it would be cheaper," said driver Connie Reittinger.

But for people like Cox, who won't be going anywhere at all, there's always wishful thinking.

“Hopefully one day I can go on my spring break in the Bahamas or Florida or something like that," said Cox.

The news isn't good for the tourism industry. At the end of last year, they began to feel the hit. Revenue was down 10 percent from what it was a year before.

I have to agree with get a clue. Alot of what we are experiencing is over speculation in the futures market... it has indeed created a price bubble of biblical proportions!!!

I can't speak for everyone, but I for one, really, really feel sorry for you and your family! To bad you can't find anyway of making money! Then maybe you could afford the horrible $.075 increase over 1yr.ago! How far do you people drive to work? What are you driving, a motorhome? If you have a vehicle that gets less than 20 miles per gallon, and your employer is more than 10 miles away, something needs to change. Swallow your macho pride and get rid of the pickup truck with tandom wheels in back. You hear people complain, but half the vehicles on the road are big trucks or SUV's with a driver and no passengers.

I seem to remember the DEMOCRAT Joe Donnely lambasting Chris Chocola about high gas prices. That's what got him elected. Now that we have a DEMOCRATIC Congress, why have gas prices gone through the roof? Will Queen Hillary or King Obama wave their magic wands and make prices go down again?

If you think it's Bush's fault for the high gas prices then you are a complete idiot and you are living in a vacuum and don't know anything about economics and how the world works. If you don't like the high gas prices then drive less, period. You do have control over that. If you drive a vehicle that gets less than 20 MPG then you have only yourself to blame for spending too much for gas. If you live more that a few miles from work then sell your house and move closer. Stop whining.

Instead of the present administration, why don't you blame Gore and the other treehuggers who refuse to let us draw from our own supply? Then we wouldn't be so dependent on Arabs whose only goal is our demise.

Anyone that blames Pres. Bush,or any other Pres. is in a bubble! The Pres. doesn't set fuel prices any more than you or I.Just as "Get a clue wrote",however OPEC IS the the main price setter of gas and oil, based on the amount of fuel that will be shipped in.Wallstreet has influence, but not control! The Dollor is down due to americans overspending/borrowing! turn on the news!Everything from home mortgages to strikes for more money.Much of it is our own fault! We seem to expect it all!For free! LOL!

They, after all, have cable tv, personal computers, video games, cds, dvds, cell phones, car stereos, cars, etc. to pay for.

You have no idea how prices are set. Since the dollar is weak against almost everyone, we have to pay more for Oil. OPEC doesn't set prices, Wall Street does that. It's how much the futures market is willing to pay for that barrel of oil. Since the dollar is weak, it costs us more to purchase that same barrel of oil.

The $4.00 gas deal in Goshen is being investigated. Soon, truckers especially won't be able to drive. We are headed for an economical disaster, and it's all because of oil greed. How much did they profit in one quarter? INSANE!

I have driven a 100mpg car for about a year now using wind energy. How does it work?... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhM70MnTIvk&feature=related Instead of using gas to propel your car you can use electricity. Take that one step further and you realize that you can make electricity at home.
